Sweet. If my wife ever insisted I spend that much on a piece of cycling apparel, I’d wonder what she was planning to get for herself.
My wife and I had an agreement – if we left DC and bought a house I could buy whatever cycling gear I wanted. We bought a house this summer so I have the ok to buy whatever I want now, though I’m still 50lbs away from being fat bike. Besides, $300 is a small price to pay to keep the weight loss train moving. Certainly beats the $200/month I used to spend on medication or the $10K I’d have to spend if I did weight loss surgery.

ParticipantI find it very easy to justify spending hundreds of dollars on warm feet — or pretty much warm/dry anything in winter. I can’t justify spending hundreds of dollars on bib shorts, though, when the $60 Performance bibs or ~$75 Primal bibs (team kit) are comfortable for 12-hour rides!

As of today, my wearing-SPD-sandals-into-cold-weather experiment has taken a downturn. I rode from Falls Church out to Best Buns in Shirlington, and my toes were cold by the time I got there, and were cold all the way back. I had wool socks on, too! My only other idea is to get some waterproof socks to squeeze in there as a water and (I hope) wind layer. Ultimately, it’s looking like I may have “to justify spending hundreds of dollars on warm feet.”

ParticipantNoooo! It wasn’t even freezing! What size shoes do you wear? If 48 in Specialized/Northwave, you can borrow some boots for evaluation. I got my first pair on GearTrade.com for $80. Some people don’t like the idea of buying used shoes, though

I’m pondering plastic bags over wool socks (possibly sandwiched by another sock). If that doesn’t work, I have mixed platform-spd pedals, and I’ll just go to wearing “normal” winter shoes.

ParticipantI got my old Lake winter boots for $40 on CL. I recently got some Diadoras for $100 from chainlove. You don’t have to spend a ton of money with a little planning and patience.

I tried the Pearl Izumi version of those socks in the spring when it was in the 30s and 40s here and they just couldn’t cut it for me. They got cold and stayed cold and did a piss poor job of keeping my feet dry. Lake and Shimano make decent “light” winter shoes for ~$120 (you can find them on sale or used all the time) that you can probably get away with just a decent wool sock in for winters there. If you’re just looking for wind protection you could probably stick with a road shoe and get the windproof covers.

Yeah, disappointing. I rode in 42 degrees last week (or the week before), and felt fine, even in shorts. Today…not so much, even with similar temps. Maybe it has something to do with humidity or something. Anyway, I’d be very interested in trying out your Northwaves. I don’t know my sizing (part of the problem in getting something else) but I suspect 48 would only be slightly too big for me. Maybe I could meet you at VTCC next week.

I think cold feels colder after it’s been cold for a while. When we have that first cold morning or two, the ground is still relatively warm, and is giving off that warmth, but after it’s been cold for a while, the ground and everything else has given up it’s heat, and so it feels colder, or at least it does to me.

LET’S DO IT.
It’s really too bad I had to take a week off from the bike due to the flu shot, I missed all of the great weather here in south Canada.
