Also I hate Surly’s marketing, from the typeface to the potty-mouthed tattooed caucasian death metal beerpacking corporate image. But that’s just me. And it’s not like they’re GoDaddy.
lol. Yeah they push it a bit, but they have a good market share and their products seem well-regarded, so whatever works works I guess. I mostly just find it amusing. I find the uber-epic everything-is-grayscale-awesome Sky-Rapha marketing more annoying.
That said the only Surly products I’ve seriously considered are in the more fatbike sphere. When it comes to a more standard build I agree there seems to be better value out there.

Thanks, everyone, for all the advice;
Wait, ok if you’re 5 11 then unless you have a really short torso/arms or the geometry is weird, you should be on the 54 i/o the 52. You’d probably fit one size up too. But, if the geometry is long and low and that’s not what you want then I’d say look at more bikes.
As far as if I would buy it myself, I’m in the bluerider/hozn camp – personally I also wouldn’t get a Straggler (but then I have 5 bikes with dropbars already). I’d also rather have a dedicated SSCX bike than have something that you’d convert (conversion would be quite involved, and you lose a geared bike option), and I’m not a huge fan of most steel bikes (just too heavy).

The Traitor Crusade is a beautiful SS option. I am constantly tempted by that, but it is probably the least practical bike I could own (under-geared for the road, over-geared for serious singletrack or pulling the trailer, etc.).
Ha, I know what you mean. Maybe you need a dinglespeed CX! I’ve ridden between 66-79 gear inches for commuting and my conclusion is that while high 70s is nice for flats and downhills, 66 is actually fine overall and it’s probably about what I’ll aim for with my SSCX configuration in progress. As long as I can coast, I don’t mind going lower on gearing.

as a bonus, I can change it into almost anything I want later by swapping out components
That’s about how I felt about my Cross Check when I bought it a 3 years ago. I never have tried SS/FG (at least not on my CC), and in fact switched to a triple crankset to better pull trailers up our piddly 8% hills. And I curse the “Gnot Rite” 132mm rear dropouts every time I put a rear wheel in, though I’m likely somewhat to blame for not spreading the rear rack before bolting it on.
I love these forums, too.

http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?6824-For-Sale-Felt-Breed-2012-53-CMOh I know, I know!
I’m re-gearing my hybrid that I converted to SS (with the ENO wheel) now that I have the Wabi. It fits 32s so it should be good enough. I got a 16/18 White Industries dual freewheel too… just need to figure out the right gearing and chain length.

My wife and I lived in Lex for three years (and my mother grew up there). Lex Coffee Roasters is great for your coffee needs, and Washington St. Purveyor is good for your beer needs. I wasn’t a cyclist there, so I don’t know about the LBS…

I can’t wait for the sale to finalize (and to retire so I can move there full-time). Hard to believe but I don’t drink either coffee or beer. I’m so ashamed.
There is insanely great riding in that area. Here are two rides I did last weekend (100 and 83 miles respectively). They barely made a dent:

That’s my latest bike-related purchase, too. Mine comes with the same neighborhood I have now, except now I have a basement with an exterior door so I can get a stand and maybe a work bench and another bike and when it rains I don’t have to carry my bike through the entire house and put it in the shower so it doesn’t drip on the floors and another bike.
Hardest part is going to be waiting until mid-August to move in.

It’s “Bee-you-nah” (but two syllables).

I rode my bike in Lex! I didn’t ever get as far as Byun-a Vista, but I rode!
Remember – there’s the (Super) Walmart on Rt. 11 going out of town? There’s your LBS.
