The squirrel in my brain is running overtime this morning, and the idea has popped into my head again of bike supply vending machines on the W&OD out west… has anyone here looked into it? Who would I contact? I’m guessing permits and power would be my two biggest hurdles…
I’ve given away many tubes and used up CO2 cartridges on newbs that got a flat.
I’ve also given away quite a few bandaids (including the 2 x 3″ variety), Neosporin packets, baby and sunscreen wipes to people who have had an accident or are in danger of turning into a lobster.
I’ve run out of maps to give out as well.
I highly recommend always carrying first aid materials that will let you deal with minor road rash and cuts. I have Costco quantities of the stuff at home and go through it at an alarming rate!
I once saw a vending machine selling small parts, gel packs, etc. in Boulder, but it was outside of a bike shop which owned and maintained it. It was also behind a heavy grille with slots only to allow inserting payment and taking the purchase out of the hopper.
I like the idea of placing them at key points along a trail though, as long as the machines are faithfully maintained and sufficiently secured. Never underestimate the power of immediacy and convenience in encouraging people to buy stuff.

Here’s a conveyor vending machine I saw in Paris that should hold enough parts to build a whole bike, if needed. I think you can even tuck a mechanic in there.
