This is a good endorsement for building an underpass that won’t wash away in a flood …
I hope that in doing the reconstruction they either raise the whole path a few inches or add a raised lip at the water’s edge so that the trail doesn’t flood as often.

ParticipantAh, neighborhood bulletin board discussions area always the BEST!
Gotta love that wonderful comment too, sorta half-way justifying the illegally-speeding drivers…!“…some of that (increased speed) is potentially unintentional. Not saying a driver can’t do something about it, but going down the hill from the skate park you will pick up a fair amount of speed and need to work to keep it down.”
{bolding is mine}Yep – I’ve always thought it was just too much like WORK to try and apply adequate pressure to the brake pedal in my car, in order to stay within the posted speed limit…
Not all drivers can handle that amount of work! Frankly, speed limits should probably be increased on all downhill runs to account for the gravity assist, and thus remove the driver’s burden.October 1, 2019 at 8:01 pm #1100760Henry
KeymasterJust heard from County Parks that repair work on the W&OD tunnel under Wilson Blvd is complete and tunnel is open. If someone could post a pic, that’d be swell.

Less than 3 months after the storm, only ~2.5 months after all the roads were repaired, and ~1 month after all the playgrounds were repaired.

I’m fairly certain this didn’t happen. They’re rebuilding as it was.

Thanks for sharing. So many blatently untrue statements. Crossing at the intersection is perfectly legal. The delay in rebuilding had nothing to do with getting approval — we haven’t gotten it yet, and we fixed all the roads & playgrounds — or because the trail is NoVa Parks — this part is County-owned– the delay was simply because the County didn’t prioritize getting it fixed.

ParticipantW&OD Underpass is reopened!
Concrete surface rather than blacktop (more durable, I suppose). Some rocks newly piled up in the stream adjacent to the trail, I guess to route water away from the trail?

Looks like riprap for erosion control from Casey’s pictures.

Better than I hoped!
That surface was concrete to begin with- which shows the sheer power of floodwater that tore though there. A yellow boundary line? Thank you. Rip-rap to protect the concrete? Even better. And it makes the path “feel” wider.
Ridden today. To my amazement, it *is* considerably wider! Who gets the thank you?

I will officially predict here that there won’t be a FEMA Presidential Disaster Declaration for the storm in Arlington. To get a declaration requires damage that exceeds a per capita damage level at both the county and state level. I doubt the state level value has been surpassed. I think the county level is about $3.80 per capita and the state level is about $1.50.

ParticipantI went running through the Wilson Blvd/W&OD Trail underpass during the great weather on Sunday afternoon and discovered that the newly restored trail was completely covered in thick mud again

It was there yesterday morning but cleaned off as of this morning (and actually probably last night, since I didn’t notice it during my PM commute).

ParticipantMeanwhile, more than 5 months after the storm, no word on when the destroyed bridges will be replaced. Best we have is this, last updated in October: https://parks.arlingtonva.us/2019/08/july-8-storm-update/
Quote:County contractors have removed bridges that were destroyed by the storm, including the bridges at 38th St. N. and N. Chesterfield Street, Bon Air, Lubber Run, Glencarlyn and Gulf Branch. The 38th St. N. and N. Chesterbrook Street bridge has been replaced. All other bridges and fords damaged in the storm are being assessed for next steps. -
