ParticipantEhh. We’ve ridden in much worse than that.

It was great heading north at 5:30pm. Fastest ride home in a while!

ParticipantNow that was WINDY! Barely stayed upright crossing Key Bridge the crawled up Wilson Blvd before bailing at Courthouse.

ParticipantAnd there goes the power!

ParticipantIt was kinda fun! The power went off just long enough for me to eat all the ice cream in the freezer. Then it came back on.

ParticipantMy rides today:
Noon – Clear and warm
2:00 – Mostly still clear and warm, with a bit of a sprinkle at the very end of the ride.
6:00 – Raining, but not hard, and no scary nearby lightning.
9:00 – Windy and a bit cold. However, the headwind just made me expend some extra calories, as opposed to being strong enough to create worries of being knocked over. And heaven knows I’ve biked in much colder this winter.Overall assessment: My refusal to pay attention to weather forecasts is once again justified. I got in all the rides I planned, without a whole lot of difficulty.

If I end up getting on my stupid bike tonight at 11:15 after a 17-hour day, it will be entirely your fault, D. And you will feel my wrath at the BAFS Pointless Prizes happy hour, too.

Yep. Amtrak, too. Trains can’t run without power. Stuck in Wilmington. D – you are off the hook, since I won’t even make it back to Union Station in time to take a CaBi ride before midnight.

ParticipantI left Vienna for Falls Church just before 9:00 tonight, and I saw some gonzo craziness out there:
1) I have never before accelerated without pedaling…until tonight
2) trees were literally reaching out from the sides of the trail into my path between Cedar Ln and Gallows
3) I *had* to keep my brakes on as I waited for the signal at Gallows, or I’m sure I would have been blown out into the street
4) along Shreve Rd I thought I saw lightning, but no, it was electricity arcing from the overhead wires–then all the streetlights went out
5) there was a distinct pine smell along Little Falls St from all the broken branches down (including the 15′ branch down across the road, which must have been 6 inches in diameter–I almost stopped to get a pic, but was too freaked out)
6) my average speed was the highest I’ve ever gotten on any ride I’ve recorded with Strava.Obviously, we’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto!

ParticipantToday’s big decisions: Bar Mitts for warm hands vs. riding in headwinds and crosswinds with more windage? I’ve got a pannier anyway, so would they make much difference? Or should I just wimp out and take the bus/metro? Just musing here. Biking to work is a hard habit to break. And then there’s the ski goggles vs. biking eyewear thing too.

My fingers and toes are super-sensitive. Plus adding wind to cold is a magnitude worse. If I were riding today, it’d definitely be: Bar mitts!

ParticipantSomehow not nearly as bad as I was expecting. The winds seemed to moderate as the sun rose, so even riding due north wasn’t terrible. Uphill into the headwind wasn’t awesome, but didn’t seem worse today than other windy days.

ParticipantYou’re going to have to use your imagination, but let’s just say the first 300 words or so of this post are unprintable profanity. Okay. This was the windiest ride I can recall. I had a hard time staying in the bike lane on parts of 14th, and nearly fell over a few times. And the cold wind just went right down into my soul. I may never be warm again.
But it’s supposed to hit 58F tomorrow, so I guess it’s okay.
