ParticipantI think exercise in general would make one a better writer.

ParticipantI think not being an asshat would make him a better writer, but what do I know?

Veronica Davis, founder of Black Women Bike DC, came through with the invitation to go on a bike ride with professional crank Courtland Milloy today. DCist posted several screenshots of Twitter posts from Ms. Davis after the ride.
Will this help to change Milloy’s perspective on transportation in DC (where he does not live)? Maybe, maybe not. But I think it was still a positive undertaking.
Interesting to see the tweets and the photos from the ride.

Doesn’t sound like he moved much on the issue, but good on Veronica for trying.

ParticipantAdmirable effort, but I suspect that he makes his living from shocking others and being very opinionated. Or am I mistaken?

ParticipantThat’s the first time I’ve seen photos of him, other than his headshot on the Post website. He really does seem to fit the stereotype of a chain-smoking, hard-drinking, grumpy old newspaper columnist from the 1970s. I’m assuming that he’s a chain smoker and a drinker from the photos. I could be completely off, but at the very least, I don’t think he exercises much at all.
The camera harness is hilarious too. He looks like an 8-yr-old kid who was dressed by his mother. Or Phillip the Hyper-Hypo from the former Mike Myers SNL skit.

I think Veronica might have done that intentionally to make him look foolish in public. Not that I’m complaining. It’s a relatively harmless way to respond to his rants.

ParticipantWell, the column is out. Aaaaaaannnnnddd predictably, Milloy did not have a “wake up call” like we would have hoped. He’s still an asshat, and the condescending tone of the piece is almost more infuriating than the call to violence from the last one. At the end he stoops even lower by suggesting that cyclists may get so irritated by the problems and annoyances of riding in the city that they would buy a car. Haha. Funny dude. Funny!
Little does he know, that most cyclists already own cars. It’s just that sometimes (most of the time, in the city) a bike is the best way to get from A to B, not to mention the fitness benefits, etc…. I have zero respect for this guy.
As one WaPo commenter said, Kudos to Veronica Davis for exposing this guy as the twit he is. He will always be anti-cyclist.

Yup. No “sorry I was wrong to suggest violence against cyclists.” No “cyclists are not all alike.” No “yup, cars present more danger to cyclists than vice versa.” I expected nothing from him so I can’t say I am disappointed. I hope it’s his last column re cyclists.

Kudos to BlackWomenBike and Veronica Davis. Doing yeoman’s work for the optics of cycling, breaking streotypes of all kinds. I would say that despite CM’s attempts at snark, lots of good things ended up in his column anyway. There are some things its going to be hard for him to say again (EG that bike lanes are “SWPL” ) And I do expect some clarification to emerge across the net and maybe into the WaPo on his anti bike points – some clarification of the actual impact of taking the lane on DC traffic, and of when and why filtering by bikes makes sense.

ParticipantI get more contrition and logical reasoning from my 8 year old than I do from Milloy.

ParticipantAnother reckless driver over the Independence Day holiday weekend — Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth. I think Werth is a solid player who helped to turn around the culture of the Nats when he arrived a few years ago from Philadelphia. But I can’t ignore the fact that he was caught driving 105 mph on July 8th, in a 55 mph zone in Fairfax County.

“A trooper paced a Porsche 911 that pulled onto northbound Interstate 495 at Georgetown Pike (Route 193) in Fairfax County about 8 a.m. July 6. The trooper stopped the car as it took the GW Parkway exit off the Beltway.”
His hearing has been continued to Nov. 12, so if he receives a short jail sentence (a weekend?), it won’t affect the team. I think the sentence should be enough to wake him up, and also require a meaningful community service requirement and a fine. (Even if it’s a sizable fine, he’ll be able to afford it. He has a $126 million, 7-year contract with the Nationals.)
Disappointing news. I’m just glad he didn’t cause any crashes or injuries.

He must have slept in and was late to make it to practice. My guess is they have to be there a set number of hours beforehand and that number is probably 5 hours given his speed and knowing that they played the Cubs that day in a 1:35pm game (I was offered tickets and didnt go because I was at the beach). It’s too bad he was speeding because I think he’s fun player on the team. Hope it’s just a one-time stupid mistake.
Of course going from 193 to GWP and hitting 105 in that short span is really gunning it.

ParticipantAnother exciting column from Courtland Milloy. He tries so hard to sound reasonable, but he just can’t bring himself to accept people riding bikes as legitimate road users.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/under-rules-of-the-road-its-car-vs-bike-or-maybe-the-rules-make-losers-of-both/2018/08/14/20193380-9f48-11e8-83d2-70203b8d7b44_story.htmlThe comments, as usual, are “fun.” That said, the anti-bike commenters seem to be outnumbered by the more reasonable ones.
