W& OD Trail To Purcellville

I’d like to ride the entire trail but once I get out there (about 60 miles from my house) how do I get back? I’d prefer to do a one-way. Short of prepositioning a car or a supported group ride, is there any public transportation back to the metro area that any of you have used?

Looks like the Purcellville Connector runs M-F 7a-7p if that’s an option.

Are you that far from the beginning in shirlington? The Friends of the W&OD say the trail is only 44.3 miles.

Check with Loudoun County Transit. They have commuter busses that run to Purcellville, although I believe that they don’t have any incoming to DC in the afternoon. They might however as that’s where their depot is.

They’re full coaches, no racks on the front but they do have storage for bikes underneath.

Other option is to double back to Reston, pick up a 505/555 bus out of the Sunset Hills Park and Ride and hook to WFC metro. the P&Ride is at the 18mi marker which means 27 miles back from Purcellville instead of 45.

Call Trails End Cycles in Purcelville and ask what might be nearby or suggest. CCrew has a good suggestion – Loudoun County Transit may have routes that are closer to the Ashbrun area or Rt 28/Dulles Town Center – check their schedule. Once you get back to Herndon, there are Fairfax Connector bus routes that run all day and weekends, not just commuter hours, and all buses have bike racks.
