I can vouch for the Pacenti’s – almost as nice as HED Belgiums/Ardennes (just a little less durable anodization by the looks of it) and depending on where you get them, they’re about half the price of the HEDs. The brake track on the Pacentis are very well machined and they’re surprisingly light, about 440 grams. Lace the Pacenti’s up to a decent set of hubs, i.e., Novatecs, and you’re probably looking at a ~1500 gram wheelset for way less than a grand (full retail plus labor).
As far as the H+Son hard anodize – I’ve burned through mine on my TB14s in about 800 (commuting) miles. I’d say there’s little functional difference between the black ano and the hard ano.
I’m trying to decide between the very wide HED C2+, the hard-anodized H+ Son Archetypes, and the Velocity Ailerons for my next commuter wheelset. Since it’s disc-brake I’m not worried about the surface — other than wanting a rim w/o machined track. Right now I’m planning to stick with the H+ Son Archetypes; they really have been great rims. And maybe I’ll stick with black, but I like the look of the hard ano. After 12k miles am needing to replace my cheapo hubs and at that point was considering just replacing the rims too (my front got a bit bent from a riding straight into a curb, though rear is probably fine).
Edit: now that I realize the SL23 comes in all-black, that is near the top of the list.

ParticipantSooo going to miss y’alls
Everyone in this community has meant the world to me and getting started biking as well as being comfortable in all types of roads and trails. I certainly will take what I learned here and apply it to the small bike community in Birmingham. I have to admit that I was a little misty eyed on Tuesday where I did my last bike commute. Keep up the great work everyone, sometimes it may feel like BikeDC has its problems but I assure you we have it so good around here.
Keep the rubber side down.
