Hi everyone–in the next day or so, we’re going to be testing, and hopefully transitioning to, a different kind of image verification system. Instead of the captcha where you have to try to match random words displayed, human verification will be based on your ability to answer simple questions.
For example, Q: What color is the word BikeArlington, at the top of this page? A: Blue
The system will randomly draw from a list of questions that we write up, so there is a chance to customize questions. We’ll solicit some questions and answers from you guys to make things fun. Hopefully this will cut down on some of the spam management that we have to keep up with.
Just a heads up!
January 28, 2013 at 7:31 pm #962259jrenautParticipantWhen will we have to answer this – at login, at new sign up, or for every post?
January 28, 2013 at 7:37 pm #962254rcannon100ParticipantRight. It seems like you would only need to do this once – when setting up a new account. That or – members who have less than ?? (20?) posts must use captcha. Once it is established that a member is not a spammer, wouldnt be necessary right?
And seriously, remember that some members are or may be visually impaired – thus a captcha solution should handle that. I know some captcha’s I have had no idea what they are saying or how to solve it.

Who you callin’ a spammer? Snarky is different than spam, right?

I think it would be the same as the captcha system we have now, so at signup and at each post.

Depends on how you slice it. If you slice spam thinly, place it on a nice rye bread with mustard and a few slices of orange cone rings – it can be quite good.

We’ll look into this. The only problem I could see here, is if someone left their account logged in and some malware or trojan took over the account and started spamming from it. Just theoretical, but unlikely in practice.

Other than that, I think Pink, Pete, ELITE are fine answers to all of life’s questions.

And here I was told it was “42.”

Good call. The challenges can also be obvious and part of the questions. “Pete’s favorite color is pink. What color is Pete’s favorite color?”
