Some moron construction workers attempted to drive a piece of machinery under the Roosevelt bridge on the wood raised section and it fell through. If you’re headed south from Rosslyn, the only way across the river after the Key Bridge is Roosevelt.
Something tells me that its going to take a while to get this fixed. Any updates appreciated.
And I thought the stair detour at the 14-th street bridge sucked.
Wow, what an incredibly bad time for this to happen. Thank you for the alert though since that’s regular route home.

ParticipantWhoops. Photo credit to a coworker.

ParticipantI saw them unloading that beast in the Roosevelt parking lot 7:30ish. I was wondering where it was going.
What engineer approved that? Sigh.
So, is this a chance to get a better trail than slippery wood?

How did he get that close? I rode up there to take a look and the moron in charge started yelling at me for crossing the yellow tape. At that point, around 8:45, they appeared clueless about what to do next. How could anyone be dumb enough to drive that heavy machine down that wood walkway?
Were they working on removing that machine?
It would be nice to get a better surface on that part of the trail. It owes my wife a rotator cuff surgery. But how would they detour us? Remember the detour when they were building the new parking lot at Roosevelt Island? That muddy strip covered with mulch. Anything …. gravel, plywood … would have been better than mulch.

ParticipantThe GWMP folks claim it is “currently being repaired.”

ParticipantThis is so absurd it’s hard not to laugh.
Somebody gonna take out the key bridge with a barge tomorrow? Then we can all ride up to chain bridge for our commutes to crystal city.

ParticipantThanks. I hope they get it fixed. My commute to Vienna is already long enough without looping through DC, or riding past the airport.

ParticipantThe stupidity it required to drive a heavy piece of equipment over that wooden bridge is mind-blowing. I luckily don’t have to use it as part of my commute, but if I did, I’d be seriously pissed off right now. Skipping that section requires biking through Rosslyn, and then crossing the GWMP at those unsafe crossings. It’s not an easy, fast, or very safe detour.

If’n I was still commuting that way, I would just consider it a preview of this winter when the MVT isn’t cleared.

I agree. I crashed on this stupid wooden bridge last week and fractured my knee.

ParticipantSorry. Confused as to exactly where the damage is. Is this on the section under the bridge? Meaning, they severed the route between the Roosevelt Island parking lot and the Memorial Bridge?

ParticipantThe Park Service could terminate the equipment operator’s contract for convenience at no cost to the government because the contractor clearly and obviously ignored any safety precautions. There are no barriers compliant with ADA regulations either so my visually-impaired friends would fall right into this equipment.

Living out in Vienna means that when it snows, I don’t ride. You guys in Arlington are spoiled with the county plowing the bike path. I remember one year when VDOT had the bright idea of dumping all the snow that was accumulating on the side of I-66 onto the bike path that ran below it. Took forever for that to melt.

So, funny story. You can’t do a post with all caps. I tried every combination and had to have at least one letter lower cased or it converted every letter to lower case. No shouting!
