ParticipantHoly Moly that’s a nice bike room.

ParticipantI’m not sure we need to see any more photos. Jabberwocky’s set up will put all others to shame.
That said, we did the same thing when looking for our condo in Williamsburg. Walked straight to the garage (a requirement) with a tape measure to ensure the the kayaks would fit.

This picture was taken about 24 hours after closing on the place. We didn’t have furniture and were sleeping on the floor but we put up the racks! A few bikes hang on the opposite wall.

ParticipantHoly OCD, Batman! That is beautiful!
I’m going to take the contrary view, however, and say there may be people on this forum who can top this.
I’ll take a couple of pix tonight so you can see what the opposite kind of set up looks like. Which I’m sure some of you have never, ever seen in your life. Outside of a hoarders show.

ParticipantYeah, a picture of a standard toolbox (which more than holds all my bike tools ), my one bike, a couple spare tires, and a few bungee cords hanging from hooks in the ceiling of my apartment building’s laundry/bike parking/storage cage room in the basement pales horribly in comparison. That’s one heck of a nice setup, jabberwocky.

Uh, yeah, anyone who thinks I win hasn’t seen Dirts shop.
I”d be willing to bet there are some pretty awesome setups out there. I’m actually ridiculously disorganized by nature, so I try and make organization as easy as possible for myself. Because otherwise things rapidly get messy.

Participant@jabberwocky – can you come to my house and organize my closet?

ParticipantWow, I am envious. I can hardly move in my bike work area when I actually set up the stand — not to mention putting a bike in it. I do most of my maintenance/repair work outside now.

I’m pretty sure I see it every time I put my bike away.

ParticipantHmm. I have a floor tire pump, a couple small chain cleaning items, and the usual items in the underseat bags on my two bikes. And that’s it. So no bike room for me. Other than the bikes themselves, the biggest space eater for me is my clothing (probably more run gear than bike gear, since I don’t like wearing bike jerseys except for races). I think my running shoes might be reproducing…

ParticipantSome of you have some really cool gear. I both wish I had more gear than my pump, few extra tubes, and the tools that fit underneath my saddle, but then even if I did, I’m not sure I would be good at using them. Which reminds me, I do want to take a more advanced bicycle mechanic type course at some point. I feel like I pay a ton for a tuneup that I could probably do myself if I just knew how–then again, last time I tried adjusting brakes was an utter disaster.

ParticipantThis is it:
I only have room for one bike at a time, it’s dark, the furnace runs noisily in the same confined space, and it’s murder getting the bikes in through the basement door. Still, I spend a lot of time down there. The bonus is that all the beer and wine are stored in the same area.

My shop is the rec room in my basement.
Mega covet! My bikes and tools are relegated to the unheated garage.
Questions abound:
How are the tool holders affixed to the metal panel?
What did you use to mill them?
Are those boxes for the cat(s)?

ParticipantThis is the “Bike Room.” It doubles as “the laundry room,” the “camping gear storage room,” the “wood shop,” “the boiler room,” “the bar” and “general storage.” The work stand is folded up and under the stairs. The tools are all in the left of the frame, just behind the sawhorses and other assorted junk. One has to be careful where they set up the work stand, especially when laundry is in progress.

This is the auxiliary bicycle storage room, a.k.a. the spare room. Also apparently where piles of laundry waiting to be ironed and framing projects go to die.

Tool holders are affixed to the metal panel with the power of MAGNETISM!
One of my design goals was to have some sort of system that allowed for infinite adjustability in tool storage, but without pegboard (because I irrationally hate pegboard). I bought a few hundred 1/8×1/2″ N42 magnets and recessed a few into the back of each tool holder and then glued a small square of sandpaper over each one. They lock on quite strongly and the sandpaper keeps them from sliding, but I can pull them off and arrange them however I want. I took that pic right after installing the bench, and have been tweaking the tool layout since then. The metal panel is just sheet steel from BMG sheet metals in Manassas.
Holders are all built out of scrap plywood (mostly 1/2″ baltic birch). I’ve been a woodworker my whole life and my dad has a seriously kickass pro-quality shop that I build furniture in. So whenever I was up in PA working in the shop I’d bring a box of tools with me and build holders for them in between other tasks. I also built the bench and all the drawers, as well as the stool thats in the picture.
Boxes are indeed for my cats. Not there permanently, but the bench went where the boxes used to be and my cats hate change, so I’ve been keeping them there until they are used to the bench. Didn’t stop one of them from peeing on the bench a few times after I put it in. Not sure if he didn’t understand the boxes were underneath or he was just expressing his displeasure at my alterations to his litter area.
