I have a thumbs up from Tom for us to basically take over Duffy’s on either Sunday February 26 or Sunday March 5. We can park bikes in the storage room and the back bar/dining area if we’re indoors. Or we can have the entire patio if we’re indoors. So I need to hear from Squadra Quattordici members for which date works best for us to have critical mass. I won’t finalize the ride until mid-week of that week depending on the weather forecast. Sorry, but not doing this ride in the rain. So one plan could be to go for February 26 and make March 5 our fallback if the weather turns to crap. Whatever date we end up with, I’ll put on BAFS calendar and infiltrators welcome.
I’d be up for Feb 26th.
Thanks!February 14, 2017 at 4:14 pm #1066072lossomes

HF, for those not wanting to do the hills loop, I will volunteer to take a crew on the Strong Women Ride on Saturday (meets at 10am at Howard U metro station) and then meet your group at the caboose after. Any ladies interested???

Sarah I’d love to . I’m Signed up for the women’s ride…would love to meet at Caboose after. Not sure how many miles that would be but I’ll do my best.

ParticipantOK, here is the plan for Duffy’s Redux …
Sunday, February 26th (if the forecast looks like crap, we’ll try again on March 5th). I will confirm after President’s Day based on what the forecast for next weekend looks like. Currently, these Squadra Quattordici members have said they can ride:
Me
lossomes
cmj7gh
f148vrSo I think we have a quorum to make it an “official” team ride. A slightly longer route (~18 miles with one lap around HP but we can do two if that’s what the group wants to do) since we’ll go across the river to ride the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail on the other side. So roll from Java Shack (get there early if you want coffee points) at 1015 with ETA at Duffy’s noon-ish.
https://www.strava.com/routes/7624636
For anyone who isn’t so comfortable riding in a group, doesn’t think they can keep the pace of the group, or just wants a shorter ride to Duffy’s, here’s an alternate route (~5.5 miles) if you need one:
https://www.strava.com/routes/7634502
Friends and infiltrators welcome. But would be very helpful to please let me know if you intend to ride (or meet up at Duffy’s) because there is a limit to how many of us can actually fit in Duffy’s (assuming we’re parking bikes inside). Twenty of us should be OK, but more than that could be too big a crowd unless people are comfortable with parking/locking their bikes up outside. We will likely “take over” the place, but it’s not a private party event. So there could be other customers and we need to be cognizant of that. Again, my friend Tom who is one of the owners is doing me/us a favor by hosting us.
Will put on the BAFS Official-ish Calendar.
More show of hands??? Questions???

Greetings folks,
Anyone interested in riding the hills of Arlington this Saturday? I used to do a Saturday morning shop ride with Tri360 that winds through North Arlington, here’s an example:https://www.strava.com/activities/287755517
These rides ended after the Tri360 closed down. I’ve been told that Conte’s Falls Church has restarted this ride as of this past weekend, so I’m wondering if anyone is interested in doing this ride, and then ride out to Caboose afterwards to grab some brew & food? For those that prefer not to do hills, we could have a second group that take an alternate route and just reconvene at Caboose afterwards?
Thoughts?
HF,
Brian Crowe at Conte’s is leading the ride and said it was no drop. Leaving from Conte’s in Falls Church 0830. Here is the Conte’s version of the ride:
https://www.strava.com/clubs/255679/group_events/139413
Brian invited me because he knows I lead (or at least used to lead … not sure whether I’ll be doing the ride this year since Rev got bought by Trek) the Rev hill ride on Wednesdays, which has some of the same climbs.
I’m still debating whether to do this. I may not decide until I wake up Saturday morning. And also depends what other stuff is on the schedule. I can attest that Brian will be a good ride leader. He’s a very strong rider but he will take care of everyone in the group. If he says no drop, that means no drop. Which basically means re-grouping at the waiting points along the route and making sure everyone makes it back to Conte’s.
Cheers,
ChuckFebruary 14, 2017 at 7:42 pm #1066092chuxtr

ChuckTraded messages with Brian about the ride. Last week, they had five riders. Two who rode “off the front.” Two who were “off the back.” Brian rode in the middle. If he’s doing this anything like I do the Rev hill ride (and I think he is), you don’t have to be climber or a strong rider to do the ride. You just have to be a rider who wants to challenge him/herself, get stronger, and become a better climber. You don’t get better on the hills by not riding hills.
No one gets left completely behind. Even if the ride leader is a stronger rider/better climber, he may still ride with you to help pace you, give you encouragement, and some tips on how to be a better climber (if you want them). So you shouldn’t be put off on doing this ride because you think it’s just for spindly types who seem to float up climbs.
I told Brian if I ride that I’ll meet the group at Glebe and Chesterbrook. Their ETA there is 0845.

Chuck,
I agree 100% that these rides do wonders to one’s climbing agility, certainly much better and quicker than doing so alone. Hope to see you on Saturday. So far this sounds very much like Tri360 ride, which is also a no drop ride and definitely not a hammerfest like the FB TNRs. I plan to ride from the shop, anyone else in on this and Caboose afterwards?February 15, 2017 at 9:04 pm #1066201ImaCynic
ParticipantHi gang,
I plan to ride out to this from FC and wanted to get the word out in case you are interested.http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?11582-1-000-Days-of-Biking-Happy-Hour

But may depart the flight pattern before that depending on what time it is. Have to be home NLT 1030 to have time to shower and change before taking my daughter to her golf lesson.

Sounds great. Saturday weather should be pleasant for both riding and golf.

ParticipantHey gang!
Looks like we should have decent weather on Sunday, so let’s do this! Roll from Java Shack in Arlington at 1015. Get there earlier if you want to get coffee points. Slightly different route than how we went last time. We’ll ride the Riverwalk Trail on the other side of the Anacostia. ~18 miles with one lap around HP. Not intended to be a “fast” ride. We’ll ride as fast as the slowest person in the group can ride to keep up. I had us at 13.4mph average speed when we did this before.
https://www.strava.com/routes/7624636
I have these Squadra Quattordicians riding:
Me
lossomes
cmj7gh
f148vr
streetsmarts (but she may ride her own shorter ride into DC)Please feel free to invite friends (I’m inviting a couple). And there’s room for infiltrators too. The ride is posted on the BAFS Offical-ish Calendar. However, please let me know about any “extras” who are joining us (either the ride or meeting at Duffy’s) just so I can give Tom some idea of how many of us to expect. We will likely be the only people there (at least when Duffy’s opens). Tom said we can park bikes in the storage room in the back and in the back bar area. So should be able to accommodate up to 20 of us without a bike storage problem. More than 20 and some folks will have to park their bikes outside. There are bike racks if you have a lock. Otherwise, we can put bikes in front of the window and “wall them off” with chairs on the patio. And those folks can sit at tables at the window to keep an eye on their bikes.
