Tactical urbanism is the concept that we can improve our public spaces through projects that are cheap, easy and sometimes temporary.

How can we bring some tactical urbanism to Arlington? We’ll discuss ideas at the June 2018 ABAC meeting, but you can also comment and discuss here.

So I had some ideas for the list:

Add protection to the following spots – possibly concrete planters or other art. Or plungers:
    – Northbound N Quincy Street N between 14th St and the ramp to the Custis Trail (Could be a W-L student project)
    – Southbound N Quincy Street N between 15th St and the southern end of the bridge over 66 (Could be a W-L student project)
    – Eastbound Lee Highway between N Oakland St and N Monroe St (plunger-sized)
    – Eastbound Lee Highway between N Oakland St and N Monroe St (plunger-sized)
    – Old Dominion Drive between Lee Hwy and Glebe Road (plunger-sized)

Lynn and Lee — add concrete barrier blocking the left-turn-only-onto-Lee lane of Lynn to reduce crossing distance for Custis Trail (this will be permanently installed with the Lynn Esplanade/Custis Trail project, but can be done with jersey barriers now)

I like this! Another hotspot is Clarendon Blvd at Whole Foods. There are a lot of paint lanes on the road, which visually instructs traffic where not to go.

That would be a place for potential planters or plungers.

Agree, just north of there I’ve seen a dad run after his tot riding a scooter with no brakes down that bloody steep private driveway entrance to Oakgrove park at 15th and N Quincy – I had my heart in my mouth thinking the child would just hurtle into the street in front of the traffic. I don’t think the residents would agree to concrete planters if its their right of way.
