ParticipantBecome friends of course.
Isn’t is wonderful to find someone who can match your abilities?
I am so happy for you.
Embrace this person.June 18, 2012 at 12:33 am #943296TwoWheelsDC

ParticipantHey Tim! Wouldn’t it be nice to have a real friend instead of an imaginary one?

Yeah, I was going to say something along the lines of, “It depends on if the imaginary friends is leprechaun sized and wears a tutu on the weekend…”

ParticipantArm wrestling. If that doesn’t settle the matter, pistols at dawn. (Paint ball pellets only, of course).

What’s the etiquette involved in an online Strava rivlary with someone that you don’t know? They take one of your KOMs, so you take two of theirs, then they take one of those back…At what point does it become a rivalry?
Wait, someone is stealing KOMs from you!?

ParticipantI never knew what Strava was until people started talking about it here.
I like the idea of the Impossible KOM from this article. Besides winning, you get to eat a sandwich afterward:

Of course not! I was asking for a friend…
Here’s the whole story: I had a KOM from a group ride last year taken just recently. When I did it, I just kind of happened to get the KOM without a serious “strava-level” effort put in for it. I surprised that it lasted as long as it did.
After I found myself over near your created segments yesterday it just happened that the same guy who took mine held those two. A little extra motivation.
I expect things to escalate.

ParticipantI’m my own main Strava rival.
Most of the segments I create are just on my commute so I can easily check if that “fast” ride in was actually fast by my standards, or just felt fast.

ParticipantLove the sandwich idea, and I get elevation points since I’m on the 3rd floor!

ParticipantI just lost my last-gasp commuting KOM to half a dozen folks that rode the segment months and years ago… must be new Strava Users uploading data. As a result this morning I set a PR on the segment while chanting “I’m gonna get you Patrick G. (whoever you are)”… Sad thing is that Patrick will likely never notice when I do get that extra 0:02 I need. Patrick, if you happen to be a Bike Arlington member- you are on notice. Nokes Blvd to Cascades Pkwy is MINE!
Regardless, I’m not a big fan of KOMs on the trails or urban areas- I’m trying to be cognizant of that and keep my competitiveness to remote sections or roads but I can feel the tug when I see than I’m only a smidge off a KOM somewhere.
I love the “and one other” feature- twice now I’ve been able to identify folks that I rode with and then chatted with them on Strava afterwards. I spend 99% of my riding alone, Strava has expanded my network and made me feel a bit more connected.
