An email on the WashingtonDC yahoo groups from yesterday evening:

“On my commute home tonight, at about 6:30, I rode about 12-18 inches away from a coiled Timber Rattlesnake (I looked it up when I got home–it’s the only rattlesnake in this part of the country, and it’s bite is potentially lethal). A cyclist riding right behind me told me that it snapped at him but missed (we were riding about 18-20 mph, which might have saved him). This is a cycling hazard that is new to me, but folks should be advised to keep on the lookout…

it was about two miles north of Georgetown”

Snakes on a trail, mf snakes on a trail.

    haha.

I put it in slow motion. From two nights ago down by the marina. When I rewatch on the video, I question how I didn’t see him until the last second, but I guess I was looking past the jogger for others.

I spotted a truly ginormous snapper turtle at the edge of the CCT this morning. It had to weigh 30-40 pounds.

Just a reminder that it’s mating season for some species, and the normally aggressive and somewhat dangerous snapper turtles are even more so. I wouldn’t think you’d have to tell people not to try to touch one, but better safe than sorry.
