File another one under “Local government support for cycling is often lacks substance.” Particularly sad because they had a chance to fix it and chose parking over the lane they had purportedly dedicated to cycling.

    From the article:

“Bike lanes are fairly new to Richmond, and some people don’t know you can’t park in them. Some people don’t know you can’t drive in them for that matter.”

So, the police are saying that the lanes specifically restricted to bicycle use which have laws against drivers entering them are unenforceable because there’s no law against parking in the bike lane (which involves illegally entering the bike lane) and they can only issue a ticket if they actively witness someone drive into a bike lane?

Question: What planet am I on?

Ultimately, the council members agreed to strike the language about bike lanes after Councilwoman Kathy Graziano said residents in her district had only agreed to a bike lane on Forest Hill Avenue on the condition that parking be allowed. She said she didn’t want it to look like the city was going back on its promise to residents.
“It’s not parked in very often,” she said. “But sometimes there are events where people park on the street.”

Well, there’s my answer: one with idiots. The stupidity of this makes my brain hurt.

I’ll just let that stand on its own.

It sounds like police all over are birds of a feather.

I am kind of curious whether Alexandria lacks an ordnance like Richmond. I have never seen anyone ticketed in Alexandria’s handful of bike lanes. I also couldn’t find any city code expressly forbidding cars from parking in the bike lane.

I find it ridiculous that each city/county has to pass laws banning drivers from driving or parking in bike lanes. Talk about inefficient!

    The war on cyclists continues…
