Is that
A) how many miles I normally ride each week
– or –
how many miles I expect to ride each week of Freezing Saddles? The question wording suggests A, but that seems irrelevant for FS.
Muchas gracias.

December 11, 2018 at 1:42 am #1092105Rod SmithParticipantPoints are capped at 100 miles/week + bonus points, so I hope teams aren’t made based on this stat!
December 11, 2018 at 1:11 pm #1092115huskerdontParticipantI was torn a bit on this one as well because of the seasons. I am at about 135 a week overall, but in winter it’s more likely to be 100 or so. Think I split the difference and put 110.

Good point. The meaning of “ringer” changed based on the cap.

We don’t really have a definition of “ringer.” The idea is that in general, we assign to teams based on last year’s miles (and this year, that will presumably be capped miles). However, we ask about ringer miles a) so that we have some idea what newbies will do, and b) so that people whose miles can be expected to be markedly different this year than last (e.g., the year dasgeh was about 9½ months pregnant, or the person who had a 20 mile commute last year and works from home this year) can say so. Since we’re comparing to actual miles people had in last year’s Freezing Saddles, expected miles in this year’s Freezing Saddles would be the appropriate measurement.
At one point, we were just using last year’s miles for everyone who wasn’t a newbie. But then some people were deciding not to participate because circumstances had changed to the point they would have far fewer miles, and they were afraid of letting down their teammates. This is our current compromise.

Thank you for the clarification, cvcalhoun. It makes sense to get information on expected miles/week to help balance teams. I was thinking of the typical meaning of ringer in sport – along the lines of someone who hides their experience or ability to gain a competitive advantage. To Rod’s point, it seemed that the cap really eliminates most of the benefit high-mileage riders bring to their team. I get that this information may still be useful in balancing teams.

I guess I’ve always wondered about this too, because my answer was 100-150, the latter being closer to my weekly average all year, and the former being what I’m more likely to average during freezing Saddles.
(I was so psyched the survey let me put in a range! I have always sucked at surveys and multiple choice answers – I always wanna answer some other thing.) [emoji38]

I changed yours to 100, in light of the above discussion.
