ParticipantObservations from the Cider Ride. I marshalled this one and offer some thoughts.
Carry a pump and confirm it works with your tubes. I helped a cyclist that had a pump but it was not compatible with his tubes.
Tubes. The n+1 rule may be inadequate. Carry several (extra) spare tubes. That way you can be ready to recover from multiple flats or help out other cyclists. I do not like repairing a tube on the road.
Review the cue sheet before the ride. I find that “riding” the route with Google Earth and the cue sheet the night before helps. Gives you an advantage if you end up alone or riding with other that haven’t. Even if you are riding in a group, try to follow along on your cue sheet. Might tend to make any mistakes significantly shorter.
Ride at a pace that works for you. Don’t hurt yourself by trying to keep up with a faster bunch (but that can be a fitness opportunity so you need to balance that as well).

Excellent idea! Should have thought of that myself. Thanks for being a ride marshall!

ParticipantI had to stop a couple of time to clear the icy slush off my rear cluster and between the chain rings. The ice made the chain skip on the cogs and one time when down shifting in the front, the chain just slid down the ice buildup. Luckily I was riding on level pavement at the time,

You have more than one cog? More than one chainring? Weird.
All joking aside… Shifting gears often helps keep the gears clear of ice. Keeping the drivetrain SUPER clean and well lubricated helps too.

Their trails (and roads) get plowed/treated immediately
But I am sure it is hell on their drivetrains anyway — all the road salt.
My favorite weather event is when it snows, melts, and then refreezes (like tonight, most likely) in the woods. You can then ride a mountain bike with low pressure on the surface without breaking through and it is fantastically fun and very fast. I don’t think we got quite enough snow to make it work tomorrow, but hopefully it happens this winter!

I love the first scene (on the NE Branch trail). It looks like you’re one of those truckers trying to make it across Alaska!

ParticipantThanks for the pics dcv. They have made me decide not to risk it tomorrow, esp since I leave work late. Can’t wait for all the yucky stuff to melt for good.

ParticipantI finished my video of the first-ever Cider Ride (Honeycrisp route). Aside from a very small number of people, I’m completely ignorant who’s in the footage. Here is the video:

Now, if only I could upload the smell and taste of that delicious hot cider.
