ParticipantAnother run down to the Lost Dog Rescue Adoption event in Hybla Valley (one foster adopted but came home with another foster… sigh… anyone want a two year old lab???). Biked home geocaching along the way, hitting the “Free School” in Alexandria. This is why I love geocaching. Some of the story from this cache:
Construction of the Alexandria Academy began in September, 1785. The Academy, which opened the following year, was composed a number of smaller schools. The English School taught writing, grammar, math, and science. The Learned Language School taught classical Greek and Latin. In December, 1785, George Washington also endowed a “Free School” at the Alexandria Academy to educate children living in poverty or orphaned by the Revolutionary War. Girls as well as boys were admitted, albeit on the understanding that girls “give place whenever there… be applicants for admittance on behalf of Boys.” The tuition of twenty students was covered by Washington’s annual contributions of 50 pounds. In his will, he left four thousand dollars in stock to run the school. Some historians regard the Alexandria Academy’s Free School as a precursor to American public education.
Perhaps the most famous student of Alexandria Academy was Robert E. Lee, best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War, who attended the school from 1818-1824.

Freaking cold this morning though. Warmed up pretty quickly though. I think we all were shivering a bit at the beginning.

For a ride like this, what are your tire recommendations presuming a road bike? Thanks.

Yes, I was riding a Capital Bikeshare bike, so these are technically ride pics. I did not have a lightsaber with me so I was temporarily detained by the Imperial forces. (Or maybe I stayed voluntarily to watch Darth Vader and his stormtroopers.) The pink R2D2 was a functioning robot. It moved around under remote control. The head spun back and forth and it beeped with sounds from the Star Wars movies.
This was a promotional video shoot for the Museum of Science Fiction, a new start-up that plans to open a temporary exhibition space somewhere in D.C. by the end of next year. Then they will open a permanent museum later on, maybe within 2 or 3 years. (If you’re interested in the project, check out their website. They also have an ongoing IndieGoGo fundraising campaign for the temporary exhibit space.)

Checking out the strava, was that a cyclocross, mountain bike or road bike gravel ride? Looking for gravel road bike rides.
ThanksDecember 2, 2013 at 11:30 am #987220Dirt

Cyclocross or mountain bike. We had 27 people on the ride. I think 4 were on mountain bikes. 700×33 cross tires were the minimum that I’d recommend. Some were on as wide as 700x40s. Tire pressure varied between 35 and 50. I’ve got a few friends that ride 28mm road tires on stuff like this, but the cornering and washboard sections make that not very much fun. We’ve had people turn back because they had the wrong tires, so I pretty much insist on people having at least 700x33mm cross tires. I use Specialized Trigger Pro cross tires. They’re a file tread that rolls pretty well on pavement. The trigger comes in sizes between 33 and 37mm. Clement makes some wonderful gravel tires. The XPLOR MSO and USH are great examples. Roll great on pavement but have enough tread to handle nicely on gravel. the XPLOR MSO 700×40 is my all-time favorite gravel tire. They’re just difficult to find.

ParticipantMy tongue was hanging out like that for the whole ride… I’ve been inspired to de-commuterize my Specialized Tri-Cross (28mm tires, with rack etc.) and see how it compares to riding this stuff on the mountain bike. I remain skeptical after losing a few teeth on those washboards
