Every time I see him, I am loaded with questions. That is a serious unicycle.Heck, at that level, do they even call it a unicycle? Are there unicycle races, for he is often cranking in a full kit? I can’t imagine what that costs, it looks wicked expensive.

36er unicycles can be had for as little as $800… or they could a few years ago. They can cost wayyyyy more than that. My old one was just short of $2500. The bars are functional. They help with steering at speed as well as aerodynamics. They make it more stable because you have more points of contact with the uni. They also give a more modest place to put the brake lever. The other location for the brake lever is under the saddle… it just looks obscene to have to reach between your legs to grab the brake. Full kit is needed for aerodynamics just like on a bike. Some of these have 2-speed internally geared hubs and cruise comfortably at over 20mph. People do endurance rides on them. My buddy Ben (Rod’s buddy Ben too) does century rides on his. Most I ever did was about 70 miles.
Pictures from today’s ride with Greenbelt and the Proteus Herd and special guest Kathy Lizzotte. Sorry Kathy I didn’t get one in focus with you in it. Most of the pictures I shoot from the saddle come out blurry. Really blurry, worse than the second of these two. :p
