There are some advantages to being significantly larger than humans… especially when I’m bound to quaint human customs…. like riding with hands on the handlebars.

The funniest part was Dirt took this pic, then flew past me on the descent, then stopped / waited / took another pic at the next switchback. He repeated this at least 3 times. I think I descended almost as slow as I climbed.

ParticipantAwesome day with the family yesterday- 2 kids, two single-wheel trailers, cherry blossoms and about 5 million of our closest friends at the tidal basin.
Happy as a clam, completely clueless that his mom had never towed anything (ever) and was about to head down Custis with canti brakes… wheeeeee!
After fighting through the hordes we found a glade of tress devoid of people- ate lunch of banh mi (provided by Hozn and family)
Ahhh post winter pudge
We killed the poor little dude… (and mom made it back up Custis more or less intact)
Not fast, not ambitious but a darn good time. A guy could forget that we live in a swamp…

The fat tires made descending much, much more enjoyable… and a lot faster. I need a lot of practice on descending to see how hard I can actually push those tires on the rough roads.
You and Mark did really well on the road bikes. I surely know that was not easy. Some of those descents and climbs would have been better on mountain bike tires. Y’all did them on 25mm road tires.

Looking at those switchbacks I almost wish I’d continued past the metric mark. Amazing riding from you and MB on the road tires on some of those surfaces.
It was a great day, a lot of climbing and a little bit of everything else.

ParticipantYou left out the best picture! The “road” connection to Stultz Gap Rd:
Everyone say thanks for the route, Sean! Incidentally, are there any poisonous thorn bushes in Virginia? Because ow.

Those brambles are painful, but not poisonous. That section, and the conversation with the back-woods, off-the-grid, private property owner, whose land we were bushwhacking through, are some of the things that made that ride epic in proportion.
(PS: I’ve often said that rides don’t “count” unless someone bleeds. This one counted for all of us.)

Just out of curiosity, was the owner okay with you guys tramping thru his property? Good thing he wasn’t trigger happy.
Hope you all had mountain bike shoes on. I’m sure it’s an Advil day for all today.

The owner was AWESOME! We were definitely fish out of water… 7 guys on a road ride tromping out of the woods almost a mile from the nearest paved road…
I’ll paraphrase the conversation.
Dude: Y’all realize you’re on Private Property?
Sean: Yes sir. We’re sorry. Can you help us find the best way to get off your land?
Dude: Go back the way you came! *Pause* *horrified looks on all of our faces* *Mischievous smile on dude’s face* Just &%$#ing with you. Go that way *point* and you’ll be out on the main road.I have very good luck meeting really interesting people on rides.

I’ll bet he’ll plant some poisonous brambles there now to keep out trespassers.

ParticipantVVill, Blacknell and DaveK riding through Union Cemetery, Virginia on a LOVELY route that took us from Fort Valley (Near Front Royal) to Mathias, WV. 96 miles and 11,000 feet of climbing. Great day in the saddle!
I did the Edinburg Gap ride on Sunday (in reverse) starting in Front Royal. The wind out there was brutal. Fortunately I had the wind at my back all the way back down Fort Valley Rd from Kings Crossing.
I only saw two other riders out all day long though. They must all be out riding the dirt roads like you and your buddies.
It was windier than this looks:
