Participanteminva and I took the REI Intro to Mountain Biking Class today up at Schaeffer Farm. Hardest 8 miles and 6 hours ever!
Here’s some pics of our crashtacular adventures!

ParticipantThanks, it was fun! I took photos, too, but they were not nearly as good as Kel’s. Here is one of her approaching the water crossing.

I will spare you the photo of my thrice-busted up knee. :p

Mountain biking is a ton of fun. It is how I got back into cycling as an adult, and though I rarely find the time to “drive to ride” these days, it is hard to find an activity so fully engaging, physically and mentally. And it only gets more fun. As I mentioned on Strava there are tamer trails around. While Schaeffer isn’t an especially technical course (like Gambril), it isn’t as gentle as Wakefield or the classic trails in Lake Fairfax / Difficult Run. Or definitely the main/outer loop at Rosaryville. I am sure others can provide great getting-started local trail suggestions.

ParticipantHello —
On Friday (the day before my MTB adventure), my son and I went just north of Baltimore to check out the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail (a.k.a. the North Central Rail Trail). We’ve discussed it here before.
It’s a really nice trail. The surface is crushed limestone and is as smooth as can be without being paved. Would be great for almost any type of bike. We were there on a Friday morning, but it was not crowded at all. We could ride side by side most of the time without disturbing anyone else. The trail continues for about 20 miles to the Pennsylvania border (where it connects to another trail; see link above).
Google Maps was overly optimistic as to the amount of time it took to get there, but otherwise it was a nice trip and a highly recommended trail a little farther afield than what we usually get.
Here are some photos.

ParticipantMy time constraints made it so that we needed to do a small group that moved pretty quickly. Culimerc, Tuba and Rod made the perfect group to ride with. Thanks guys!
Thanks Tuba for the photo. We’ll do a Party Paced ride in a few weeks and get a bunch of people out on the gravel. It is definitely fun with a big group.
Thanks for all the great riding photos, y’all. You make me happy.

It did seem a bit advanced for an intro course… it was definitely a challenge! I psyched myself out on some of the obstacles and wound up not trying them – I seem to do better if I don’t have time to think too much beforehand
Riding the trails at the end of the class was really fun!

Needs more suffering!
The way he blew up on the last climb told me that there was plenty of suffering on that ride.
