I’ve always wanted to visit Chincoteague and Assateague. Please let us know how the riding is there. Are the bugs bad? Is it worth hauling a bike there?
Riding there is fantastic! The island is nice and flat so it’s the easiest riding I’ve done since starting my commuting. I’d definitely recommend hauling bikes there. In fact, when we go, we park at our rental and ride our bikes almost everywhere that we want to go. The island is small and quiet and very bike friendly.
As long as you coat your leg liberally in bug spray (100% deet) you should be fine.

We saw this guy from the car.
Though, later while bombing down the Chestnut section of the SM100 course I got within about 5 feet of another one this size where the trail forked. I don’t think I’ve ever braked so hard. The rattle went off (which sounds very similar to a powertab freehub) and luckily the turn we wanted took us away from the snakey snake.

ParticipantMuch more exciting that the three to four foot rat or king or northern racer (some black snake, which I’m not good at differentiating) we came across on Saturday that was stretched out more than halfway across the W&OD around mile 30.

I’ve seen a big one on the trail right at the Leesburg bypass. “Some black snake” is close enough; I don’t stop to look closer.
A couple of weeks ago on Jermantown Road I was all like “ride around the big stick…yikes! giant snake in the road…eeww, snake guts.”

ParticipantDid this Saturday morning. MacArthur then down to C&O Park is one of my favorite ride segments. Chugging back up from the river will make you feel like a mini-rockstar!
