ParticipantI will try harder to avoid baggies. This was a very light one that blew in and became unextractable. The plastic locked up my freewheel and I could not remove it and I could not coast without risking tearing my derailleur off and we all know what happens when a busted off derailleur gets caught up in the rear wheel. Kudos to the fixie riders but honestly, if there was no coasting, I probably wouldn’t ride. So on the last mile, my front derailleur cable snapped, so I’m going downhill at 8mph on my 26t chainring, pedaling furiously, braking hard. Pedaling and braking, the opposite of coasting and (no offense fixie riders) the worst bicycling I’ve experienced in recent memory.

ParticipantThis baggie made the last ten miles or so of my ride less than excellent.

ParticipantBefore I had lights for riding home all the way, I used to ride from downtown up the Met Branch past the “Big Stinky” hill, and down to the Fort Totten Metro. Usually got there right at 7pm, so I could take the train the rest of the way to Greenbelt.
One night I somehow got a long piece of wire wound completely around and through my rear derailleur area and into the cassette. Took me the whole Metro ride to get it unwound and out.

ParticipantRod, do you have to load and unload those types of deliveries yourself? If so, who watches the bike/remaining boxes while you are doing that?
Just curious.

Those who might benefit from a box of paper disappearing are entirely unaware that an opportunity to make it happen exists. I use loading docks. When I park in front, I know the security guards, who can see my bike. There are cameras everywhere. The only time I needed the cameras was to prove UPS driver busted my wheel in a loading dock. Stuff that people might want to steal tend to get delivered nonstop even if client did not request rush service. Don’t tell.

ParticipantApparently while I was on Ohio Drive, people thought I was a bike cop in my cool Bike DC shirt (yes, the black shirt underneath is because I’m in mourning for this year’s event)! This shot is on the path from MVT to Boundary Channel Drive with the Columbia Island Marina, Pentagon, and Air Force Memorial all in back.

ParticipantStarted off the weekend driving to Millersburg, Ohio for a gravel grinder race. 7 hour drive… pulled into an Amish campground at 9:30pm… set up a tent (camp site #69! Woohoo!)… was comfy in my sleeping bag despite 20 degree temps… had breakfast with 30 of my closest Amish friends… pre-road the first 1/3 of the course to get a feel for the entry climb… raced — spending most of the time helping people catch up to groups they’d been dropped from… hopped back in the car… drove 7 hours home…. got 3.5 hours sleep then headed out for a gravel grinder century in the Shenandoah with an amazing bunch of people… home by 9pm.
Neutralized, rolling start of the Amish Country Roubaix race.
Cultural photo from my pre-ride. Didn’t photog much during the race.
And on Sunday…
VVill, Blacknell and DaveK riding through Union Cemetery, Virginia on a LOVELY route that took us from Fort Valley (Near Front Royal) to Mathias, WV. 96 miles and 11,000 feet of climbing. Great day in the saddle!
dcv descending on the dirt roads from Woodstock Tower.
Amazing way to spend a weekend. Sure beats the hell out of a weekend of mischief in Vegas.
