ParticipantLast Saturday I rode across Indiana (RAIN) from Terre Haute to Richmond on US 40 (National Road) with about 1400 other cyclists.

CitiBikes! Great system, but people in NYC are freakin’ morons when it comes to bike infrastructure.

What street does that cycletrack run along? I want to ride there the next trip I make to NYC.
This trail runs along the Hudson. Pretty sweet trail. I rode it from Chelsea to Battery Park in May

ParticipantI rode with Steve Eunpu today. He’s BikeArlington’s National Bike Challenge team leader. Unfortunately I didn’t warn him in time, I didn’t see in time that we were headed for a set of about six stairs that weren’t really visible from the approach. He tried to stop, went over the bars and tumbled down the stairs. It was not pretty. I thought he would be hurt worse than he was. A bruised or possibly cracked rib, and some scraped skin. He mentioned afterwards that he had a similar rib injury en route to our last ride together, a fact he didn’t bother to mention to me on the day it happened. I guess I’m bad luck for him.
I sort of used his crash today as an excuse to slow the pace a bit and to shorten the ride a bit, but although he couldn’t breathe deeply without pain, I still had trouble keeping up on the final big climb. He wasn’t interested in taking Metro and soldiered on. I should have ridden with him at least to where we meant up, but I was feeling tired. Still sort of recovering from what I guess was a slight case of heat exhaustion on Friday. So we parted ways at 14th Street Bridge. He had another 25 miles to go. He’s a tough guy. I hope his rib isn’t broken. Other than that it was a fun ride.

ParticipantOh man, that is truly awful!
Please send him our regards. I hope nothing is broken but I suspect he’s not gonna be feeling too good tomorrow. Would you mind telling us where these scary steps are located so we can try to avoid?

ParticipantI just got an email from Steve, He sent me a link to some pictures he took and the comment “it was fun!” He’ll be alright. A 59 year old that can take a fall like that and bounce back up is one badass mofo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/96457413@N05/
It’s kind of an odd place, on a small sidewalk near a bike path that follows Oxon Run in Southeast. Between Livingston Rd. and the creek, before you get to the right turn to get on the path going north https://maps.google.com/?ll=38.825065,-77.003453&spn=0.007055,0.013089&t=m&z=17

That’s the West Side Highway…looking south toward Tribeca/ WTC.

ParticipantHere is a picture of the stairs. It looked like a ramp down until I heard Rod scream at me. I’m one lucky guy. Can’t figure out how I managed to flip down the stairs without any major injury.

So Awesome – I grew up in Richmond, IN – very near route 40. In fact, some of my first bike rides were along the sidewalk where it cuts through Richmond.

This is why I LOVE gravel grinder rides.
Loudoun County Tan Lines.PS: I’m working on setting up an “introduction to Gravel Grinding” ride series in the next few weeks. I’ll lead them once or twice per month through the fall. Sunday Mornings will likely be the time.

We almost had a similar incident in Virginia Highlands Park — after the ride, we were riding over to Joyce Street to go home via Southgate Road (gentler hill than through Rosslyn). There are a number of paths through the park, but we ended up on one that ended in a few stairs. Luckily, we caught it in time to off road over to another path.

That path is great but it gets COMPLETELY OVERRUN in nice weather, especially on weekends. There’s also a path along the East River for a few miles, but it’s in pretty bad shape. Not lots of options in NYC. They close roads in Central Park, but those also get crowded during obvious times.

ParticipantI only snapped one pic from my phone yesterday, but I’m sure there will be more soon. Not sure if you can tell from this photo, but our little train stretched along Hayes from the corner of 15th St S to 12th St/the mall entrance (we’re on the sidewalk here because we used the street by the mall).
