Interesting growth in bikey stuff in the city, though the distribution is irregular and of course the road qualities “vary some”, shall we say. Still, some real positives here as long as you watch where you are going. Bikelife in NOLA would be improved with some enhanced wayfinding signage. And biking in a new city does wonders for one’s appreciation of the infra in ARL and the DMV.

After living in NOLA for a year and a half now, one thing I’ve really noticed vs the DC area is how much more polite the drivers are to cyclists. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had somebody pass too close over that entire time and I can only think of one time where somebody honked/yelled at me. I think it’s largely because our speed limits on most streets are low (and people mostly adhere to them if not drive below the speed limit) and nobody’s really in any hurry because it’s such a small town anyway.

Our streets, especially Uptown and mid-City, are in horrible shape and we’re lacking in MUPs overall (although the ones we do have are quite nice), but it’s easy enough to string together routes using less traveled roads so the lack of MUPs isn’t that big of a deal. And there are decent number of bike lanes, although they inexplicably disappear at times.

Totally agree on the signs. They exist to some extent, but not as much as they should. It was easy to get lost when I was first finding my way around. Even now, I’m still figuring it out. For example, I just found a better connection route from Jeff Davis path (the final bridge in your photos in the post above this one) back to my home in Uptown about two weeks ago. I was taking a left at the first light on the upriver side of the bridge and using Washington>Napoleon. Going straight and using Nashville is much lower stress and only adds about a mile.

I see you got to City Park. Did you get to Audubon Park and the Mississippi River Trail along the levee? Or up to Lakefront? Or take the ferry (or drive) across the river to Algiers and the MUP/levee on that side?

My two biggest complaints about cycling here:

1) The condition of the streets
2) We need 1 more ferry upriver – there’s a dock at Audubon Park that would be perfect. There was a ferry that ran there pre-Katrina that never came back. If that were put back in service, it would be so easy to put together three different loops of varying length using that + one of the three existing ferries.

Yes, got to Audubon, was staying down in that area (near Williams Plum St Snowballs!) for a couple of days. Brought my wife down so she can care for her family while working remotely for a few months. I’ll be back in mid-November and will explore more extensively – lots to see. Great way to really *see* the different parts of any city.
