I’ve been using a video I shot last Wednesday showing a portion of my ride from 92nd Street to the Staten Island Ferry to show how empty the streets in NYC are. The video starts about 9:45 am as I leave Columbus Circle at the southwest corner of Central Park heading down Broadway and passes through Times Square. I would never Idaho-stop like this if it weren’t for Covid-19. Later in the day there are generally lots more bike out, but not more cars.

Central Park can be quite crowded mid-afternoon through evening and on weekends, so I’ve been playing with alternate routes to my default laps in the Park. I’ve tried riding the exterior roads a couple of time (5th Ave, 60th St/Central Park South, 8th Ave/Central Park West, and 110th St/Central Park North). This video is from yesterday morning, Satuday, about 10:45 am and covers about 2/3 of that loop.

Early in the stay-at-home, traffic was light and some of the trails weren’t too busy. This video from Friday, March 27, is riding a part of the East River Esplanade and the Hudson River Greenway. This was just after noon. I’ve ridden that a couple more times since, and it can be very busy.

May Day I rode mid-day through Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and dipped a toe into the Bronx. The video is the section in Brooklyn from the Pulaski Bridge to the Williamsburg Bridge.

Sorry that you got hurt. I always thought that training to use clipless pedals is easier while mountain biking. It’s less painful to fall on grass/dirt than pavement as long as one avoids rocks. Get well soon!

And I agree – one bad word is impressive. I would have let loose with a string of expletives.

Thanks all. I’m ok. I banged and scraped my knee and the carbon frame has a little more personality on the down tube
