My mental health break each evening has been a bike ride with my camera. The silver lining in all of this is getting some (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime shots of the deserted streets. The French Quarter is particularly amazing with so few people out and about.

I love this one – if it weren’t for those two pesky cars and the parking meter, this could be from a century ago. It’ll be going on my wall at some point.

Crazy. I’ve never been to New Orleans, but I always imagined it crowded with tourists all times of the day. Are there just no people around, or are you skillfully waiting until people get out of your shots? I considered riding to downtown DC just to see what it’s like, but then I’m all “nah”, don’t need to see it that bad ;)

Nope, I’m taking my rides right after I get done working. Head out sometime between 5 and 6 each night, so right during rush hour. I live about 3 miles from The Quarter – nowadays that’s about a 12-13 minute ride with the lack of traffic, whereas it would usually be 20+.

People are very much complying with the stay-at-home restrictions. The only folks you see out are essential workers, folks exercising, and folks doing essential errands. There have been a few reports here and there of the police breaking up large gatherings, but not many at all.

Hunkering down is familiar to people down here due to hurricanes, so this isn’t all that unusual – other than the duration of it.

As far as the tourists – there are none to be seen. The hotels are sitting at less than 5% occupancy. (as they are most everywhere) Most of that occupancy is by residents isolating from their families for whatever reason (many health care workers in particular are staying in hotels rather than going home), out-of-town health-care personnel who have come here to help (we’re the largest hotspot in terms of cases per capita in the world), and by the city housing the homeless (on a voluntary basis) for a month.

That said, those benches and that entire sidewalk area would normally be bustling. The takeout line at Cafe du Monde is regularly 100+. Jackson Square, the park in front of the cathedral, would be full and the fence around it occupied by artists. Bourbon Street (the last photo in my first post) would be packed full of people

It’s eerie. Beautiful, but eerie.

Tues (or Wed?) after the rains, a nice road-based ride down to Jones Point, with the only trail-based portion being the bit of 4 Mile Run Trail to pass under 395.
The recently-ended afternoon rains kept most people inside that day — Old Town was an eerie ghost town, like a zombie apocalypse movie…

Riding in New York City during this pandemic has been enlightening. You can get many places on streets with no traffic, but Central Park can be very busy.

Bethesda Terrace and Fountain in Central Park. This should be very busy with pedicabs and horse drawn carriages blocking the view.

Lexington Ave looking from Yorkville towards Midtown.

Futon St and the Seaport Museum.

Central Park road loop by the E 90th St entry.

Battery Park City area with the Hudson River Greenway and the New World Trade Center.

Yesterday’s winds did this house in. Built in the 1870s. Thankfully it wasn’t occupied as it was being renovated.
