I had never ridden Kirby Rd. past the Marie Butler Nature Preserve to 123, but knowing the road was closed so there would be little car traffic and I might be able to ride up the hills without getting run over, I did yesterday, partially to check out the damage.

The barriers they have up are great for stopping cars but are no match for a bicycle:

I know this thread is for pics, and this is a vid. But isn’t a video just like, thousands of pics mashed together? ;)

Last Friday, Al and I biked up the Rachel Carson Greenway to a fishing hole. Well, biked and hiked…

I’ve been doing some exploring of New York on bike over the past 10 days, one Borough to go. Here’s an unedited video heading up the 1st Ave bike lane (53rd to 59th) in Manhattan and crossing the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge from my Long Island century ride last Thursday. This is with a GoPro Hero 3+. It picks up very little sound other than the pause beep from my Garmin Edge and what sounds like chain noise. The only time you hear my voice is at 10:02 when the three cyclists block the lane during the green light (“Vamanos seƱores,” very faint). I was calling most of my passes and using my bell, something that almost no one seems to do in this area.

Rode in my 5th NYC Borough today, Staten Island. Seems like the only bike access (other than during 5 Boros) is by the Staten Island Ferry. I was trying to do a complete circle tour of the island, but I couldn’t tell if I could ride the 440 shoulder for the bridge over Fresh Kills (kinda ominous name that) and the service road really didn’t look open at the transfer station, so I missed the southern half of the island.

In the 1970s, when people were complaining that there was no bike route from Brooklyn to SI, because Robert Moses built the Verrazano Narrows Bridge without bike/ped accommodations, the MTA ran some buses with the rear seats taken out to provide room for bikes. I took one of these the one and only time I biked on SI.

I assume there is probably a bus with bike racks on the front running Bklyn to SI these days?

I am glad you are exploring all over NYC. Its really a much more beautiful city than its given credit for, and some of the most amazing places are in the outer boros. And autumn is my favorite time of year in NYC.

Today I tried to ride the full Manhattan Island “Circle” staying on the river front. It pretty much works on the Hudson River, but not so well above 37th St on the East/Harlem Rivers side.

The “Mountain Bike Trail” in NOLA’s City Park:

Which includes the highest point in the city – 48′ above sea level. I’m quite ashamed to say I was semi-winded from the ‘climb’ after all these months of flat ground.

Check out the Alice Austen house — it’s only a mile or two from the ferry.

You can get down to the south end of the island (Conference House Park is pretty nice) via Hylan Blvd, and back via Arthur Kill Blvd. Don’t go near 440 except to cross over the Bayonne Bridge. You can get to Staten Island via ferry from lower Manhattan to Jersey City, and then ride down to the bridge. Not tremendously scenic (except for the ferry crossing) or agreeable, but doable.

BTW, “kill” comes from old Dutch meaning “creek”. But that doesn’t stop residents of Philadelphia from dubbing the Schuylkill expressway the “Sure Kill”.

For some reason I did not feel like riding the Libby Hill cobblestones this morning.
