ParticipantIn what is now the farthest trip I’ve made on my bike from my apartment in the Seattle area, I rode to the foothills of Mount Rainier a couple of weeks ago on the first imperial century I’ve done since moving here. I rode the Foothills Trail on the way, and I made a video of biking the trail.
The Foothills Trail is a rail-trail that gives me vibes of the Indian Head Trail in MD, and it’s the trail that everyone here seemed to have told me that I needed to ride. So, I finally rode it, and it’s a pretty awesome trail!
Here’s my video of the trail. Enjoy!

ParticipantMoved to New Orleans at the end of March and starting to fall into enough of a routine (working daily from a home office for the first time, so no every day commutes and the AAA ballpark isn’t as bike-friendly as Nats Park) to find enough time to get out for more than just errands. Now I just need to remember to bring the camera everywhere since it’s so amazingly pretty here

ParticipantEaster is basically a five day holiday in Germany, then schools are out the week after Easter. Add to that just about perfect cycling weather ad the fact my time here is getting short, so I had to get in another bike tour. This time I headed from Frankfurt to Fulda in the Rhön. The Fulda Gap was Napoleon’s retreat route in 1813 after the Battle of Leipzig, and during the Cold War was one of the two expected tank invasion routes.
Day 1 I headed out the Hohe Straße, dropping down to the Hessen R3 bike route north of Hanau. That basically follows the Kinzig River for a while and the A66 Autobahn the whole way.
This was somewhere near Gelnhausen.
Lunch stop at the Fink Bäckerei in Steinau an der Straße, across the street from the Brüder Grimm Haus.
I believe this was the gateway to the former Benedictine monastery in Schlüctern. This is also where the R3 left the Kinzig and started climbing

So far I’ve only seen one flattened amphibian near one of these signs.

ParticipantDay 2 started with three hours at the Sieben Welten Therme and then a loop out the R3 through the Milseburg Tunnel, up to the Hessen-Thuringia (former BDR-DDR) border, and back to Fulda. Google Maps and Garmin routed me along a “trail” after climbing out of Habel towards Boxberg. I saw no such “trail,” and continued climbing and turned onto a gravel forest road. I eventually worked my way back towards the “trail.” Later at Gotthards, the L3176 on my plotted route was closed, so I detoured back to the R3 near Bieberstein.

Inside the 1172 meter long Milseburgtunnel. The tunnel is closed November through March because of the bats hibernating there. Lots of trail raffic on Easter Saturday.

ParticipantDay 3 was supposed to be just a short stretch of the legs while I waited for my wife to drive to Fulda from Frankfurt. After about seven miles I stopped at the Café am Uniplatz near our hotel for coffee and croissant and got a text saying she was running late and I had at least another 90 minutes to ride, so I headed east. Once she was there we did the walk around the Barockviertel and toured the Vonderau Museum, especially enjoying seeing the postwar Fuldamobil.

ParticipantDay 4 was more driving than riding. We drove to Gersfeld (my #BAFS February tour)and up over the Wasserkuppe (highest point in Hessen) and then to Schlitz. After walking up the hill we had the Wurst plate at the Burgen Café at the Hinterburg. That’s where we parted ways, she drove back to Frankfurt via Bad Nauheim, and I rode the Hessen R7a to Bad Salzschlirfer.

I thought for a minute you were doing this on an e-bike.

Ha! My Jones has been relegated to road/gravel duty, since I don’t own one of those types of bikes. The frame bag is there to carry my lock, jacket, extra drinks and food, and generally make the bike more dorky looking
