Nice jerseys! I’d love to ride Natchez Trace sometime, and it’d be great to hear how the trip went when you get back.

We are in the car now headed back home. It was an awesome trip with lots of history in the mix. More details later this week when we all have computers available.

As part of our contract with Flutterbee we had to zip up our jerseys for the finish line photos.

Last month, four couples/friends, my wife, and I spent six days pedaling through the hilly, wind-y and wine-dy roads of Tuscany in Italy. The ten of us went through the Backroads touring company, and it was straight from a dream. The package included really nice bikes, riding intel and support, incredible meals, and beautiful hotels during the bike tour. We didn’t have to do a thing except pedal and absorb the Italian sun & culture.

Minus three of us, everyone rode the Backroads machines: titanium road bikes with Ultegra Di2. One guy opted to pay more for an S-Works Specialized Roubaix, and my wife and I used a Co-Motion Periscope tandem due to her being a little smaller and not being able to use one of the Backroads ti bikes (and she understandably didn’t want to use a kids’ 24″ wheel bike that they offered):

Day 5: Riding Tuscany by ricky d, on Flickr

Although we were usually the last ones to arrive at the hilltop towns (all the towns where we stopped are on top of the mountains), we’d often blow by the single riders on the curvy downhills, sometimes reaching speeds as fast as 45MPH (which made my wife scream a few times).

The roads were in great shape and uncrowded. When we’d approach towns – which again, were on top of the mountains so we were a little slow-going, cars would never honk at us to hurry up or get out of their way. They’d queue up behind us, and only pass when it was totally safe for us and them. This blew my mind.

Since it was grape picking season in Tuscany, there was sweetness in the air:

I ordered them through Primal and highly recommend them. They were super responsive and replied to my emails usually within an hour. Primal has an easy to use online design system but because our design was so graphics heavy, the system kept hanging up. After talking with their rep, I ended up sending them a mock-up and all the pics and they did the design for me. The jerseys were reasonably priced ($90) with a minimum order of 5.

It was cool seeing our group from a distance when we wore the jerseys, though it was a bit disturbing riding behind someone fearing Judd may leap out of the pocket at any moment! ;)

It’s an interesting experience to ride a bike with a picture of yourself peeking out of a pocket at you.

Also of note, my jersey was a women’s jersey because the minimum order required 5 of the same style. The experience taught me that anyone ordering jerseys should always make a women’s jersey available. They fit completely differently. I went a size up and was still uncomfortable particularly in the sleeve area.

It’s probably good that you all did not get matching shorts then.

I made a video of my rainy bike commute home from last week, and the music is from a live recording of the forum’s very own bentbike33 in his string quartet!

The story behind this is as follows: One day on a morning bike commute, I had the song “Rock Lobster” by the B-52’s stuck in my head for the entire ride, so I put that as my ride title in Strava. Then, I get a message from bentbike33 saying that he had played a version of the song for his string quartet. I asked him to do a recording of it, and after he did a live recording, he sent me the audio file. On a rainy afternoon, I felt inspired to film the commute and put the music over it (had to be a rainy ride because lobsters tend to be wet as they live underwater).

    Here is the result. Enjoy!
