ParticipantBikedavid, new friend Lu, and I spent a few hours poking around Baltimore yesterday. (We biked out and took the MARC back — the MARC didn’t have a special bike car like it was supposed to, but fortunately the train wasn’t crowded).
We found Baltimore’s longest cycletrack, on Maryland avenue. It almost-too-conveniently runs from near Penn Station to near Peabody Brewery. Don’t hesitate to put your bike on the MARC and explore Baltimore one weekend day — we had a really nice time biking around the city. There’s lots to do and see.
Sadly, it seems that some of Baltimore’s new bike infrastructure, including the Maryland Ave cycletrack, is at risk of demolition.

Wait, so MARC actually let you put bikes on the train with no bike car? Pretty cool if so.

Siiiiigggghhhhhh. Yeah fine, streets need to be wide enough for fire equipment. But Roland Ave (where my friend Tom Palermo was killed) is an urban speedway badly in need of a road diet and solidly protected bike lanes. Going backwards is unacceptable.
We spent Saturday last weekend toodling around Baltimore, too. Connections between West Baltimore station, the B&O Railroad Museum, the Inner Harbor and Penn Station were all quite bike-friendly (though the neighborhood around West Baltimore is more than a little sketchy). We explored some of the Jones Falls Trail, which has a few design flaws but creates a mostly protected north-south route through the city. MARC service was horribly delayed both coming and going, which sucked hours out of our day, caused major childcare hassles, and prompted us to declare Sunday as a “public transit free” day.

ParticipantSorry to hear that MARC was a hassle last weekend. Our train left almost exactly on time.

Yes, the conductor spotted David and me franticly looking for the bike car. He laughed at us (in a friendly way), said there was no bike car on that particular train, and to just do our best. I wouldn’t try this during the week.

Yes, but I understand you met some pretty cool people on the train home.

First off, welcome to the forum (since this is your first post)!
I mostly like the video, especially the transition from night into day along with the fact that I’ve never biked the whole way from the Beltway south to Mt Vernon Highway along US-1 (I always do parts and take other roads). The music plays well with the sped up, chaotic nature of the footage, but it is a bit shaky (which could make viewers sick). Does your video editing software have any anti-shake/shake reduction functions (I use iMovie which does)?
Looking forward to the next one!
Since it is the basic GoPro Studio editor the options are fairly limited, and perhaps no motion smoothing in the world can handle the notoriously stiff Cannondale CAAD 10. My hardware at the moment is a glorified Windows tablet (all-in-one PC). I have been working on a new video since last night but the GoPro Studio crashed and deleted all of my work, so I’m playing around with Lightworks for the first time today. Thanks for the support and it is a great ride, save for the mouthfuls of bugs at those hours.

ParticipantLocal cycling adventure taking me from Rosslyn to Crystal City back up Custis Trail to Virginia Square area back to Rosslyn. Blame the bike for enabling the non-cycling activities. Edited on GoPro Studio because Lightworks crashes my computer ever time whereas GoPro just crashes some of the time.

ParticipantI watched the Gravity Soul in Frederick on Saturday. It’s a dual slalom race — if you don’t know what that is, it’s a short downhill mountain bike race where contestants ride side-by-side on separate tracks. The courses are swoopy, with berms and jumps. It’s exciting to watch because you can see both racers pushing each other, the whole course, at breakneck speeds. On this course, I heard qualifying times were as fast as 28 seconds. It’s also amazing watching kids (real and “-at heart”) get 5+ feet of air.

ParticipantMoving across the country from the DC area to the Seattle area has been stressful, exciting, and huge boost of inspiration and creativity, so I did some extra work to polish up future bike videos. First off, I redid my YouTube channel trailer that includes an animation that I created that I can use in my videos. I decided to post this here because I still have a backlog of footage from biking in DC that will make its way into upcoming videos along with new footage from biking in Seattle.
Here’s my new channel trailer; those with a keen eye may be able to see themselves in it 😎

ParticipantFresh off renovating my YouTube channel, I’ve got a video for a short but obscure trail in Seattle: the SODO Trail.
SODO is derived from “SOuth of king DOme” referring to the King Dome football stadium which used to be in south Seattle until its replacement by CenturyLink Field. The name then changed to being derived from “SOuth of DOwntown,” but the origin of the name is still different. The neighborhood is industrial with lots of warehouses that are slowly being converted into studios and lofts. There are lots of really cool murals/graffiti (my favorite types of art) that can be seen on the backs of the old industrial buildings, some not being visible from the light rail or nearby roadway.
The SODO Trail runs for about a mile alongside a section of the Link light rail near the SODO and Stadium stations. There’s a comparison to be made between this setup and that of the future Purple Line/CCT with the use of space for a parallel light rail/trail, but the histories are entirely different.
I’m trying a lot of new things in this ride video that will also be in future videos to provide more detail and to ensure cohesion across my channel. I hope it works out.

ParticipantAloha. Papillon Cycles ran to District Wharf today (RAID Papillon-District Wharf). Maybe not the first bike shop there, but the first with pictures. First up, bikes have free run of the place, though it was crowded enough with people that we locked up (plenty of bike racks, end to end). ParticipantMore from the raid: Biggest mission objective was finding food that was vegan, per one of our rider’s request. Only half of the available restaurants were open today, and all were quite busy. Found what we sought at the (very) freshly opened Velo Café @ District Hardware and Bike.
Riding down there, less auto and pedestrian traffic than we expected.
Overall, an easy ride.October 22, 2017 at 3:13 pm #1077037Judd

I like the spinning cassette in the video. Looks like there’s some great murals along the trail.

The morning I got the footage for the video, I was actually running late (SURPRISE, SURPRISE :p) for a group bike ride starting from Gas Works Park in the heart of Seattle (16.6 miles away, ~1.75 hours of riding to get there with hills), so I was unable to stop and really enjoy the murals. I will make a return trip to do so, especially since there is one particular mural that is somewhat hidden from view but has a particular opinion of the choice of logos for a certain DC-area football team and a certain Cleveland-area baseball team.
Also, the sound for the cassette is a recording of my commuter bike’s rear wheel.
