The #blokesbroadsbikesandbrews crew rode the #forktofarmfondo in Pennsylvania Dutch farmland last weekend (http://www.farmforkfondo.com/pennsylvania-dutch/). It was originally conceived as a farewell ride to our beloved @BeachFelipe who then subsequently decided he wasn’t going anyway soon since he is so attracted to the drama surrounding the POTUS it makes all other places look deadly boring.

Lancaster County PA is the heartland of the Amish community and this ride was conceived to bring the farming and cycling communities closer together given that cyclists love to ride where there are farms, but the two communities often exist in parallel universes. Lancaster County also is famous for its topography, with lots of rolling hills and a few category-rated climbs (of which this 91-miles course included 3).
We had a delightful time, the logistics were superb, food mostly all locally grown and prepared (including whoopie or whoopee pies) and all of the rest stops where hosted by Amish families on working farms.
It was a bit pricey (~$300 registration fees) but a top end quality event organized by #wrenegadesports. There is also a Covered Bridges of Lancaster County century which is more affordable (~$60 registration, https://lancasterbikeclub.net/lcbc/) organized by the local bike club (approaching its 40th anniversary) that covers much of the same terrain and might be worth checking out (its on my bucket list).557c8bb5e49095dfdaad21deb2b18a39.jpgf5c351565a98e4cc0cb63f2ce9c68737.jpg0c81c72eaf2e6615d650215f11e61293.jpgc436f4cd3c2026eebbff72aba90febbe.jpg

We spooked a horse and buggy on a climb; saw lots of cows (which later provided much needed homemade ice cream at mile 70); Mr Happy tagged along; and we held a tight paceline for the first 50 miles until the first and steepest hill climb where we had mechanical issues, got shredded and then descended into general chaos and survival mode…#farmtoforkfondo 3f08236e7b8040c57161707156c47c0c.jpg42a6e851b21b49e2d6c3c857f6ddd72b.jpg024391ef50859f7763ddbe6c1f2b1186.jpg9a68b8c7c4d6540acfb959916b671012.jpg

The Amish children seemed fascinated by MAMILs even though they live on farms; we saw horses and @SteveO learned about electrified fences; we forced smiles at mile 74 to hide the fact that we were all inside our own personal pain caves; we passed the national minature train museum which has a caboose motel and restaurant which would be an excellent base camp for future #discoverlancaster bike rides

@SarahBee strapped on wings at mile 80 which I am not convinced were ICU compliant; I was too knackered to muster a smile at the finish line; we arranged for @BeachFelipe to receive therapy after the ride but not sure it got to the root of his disturbance; it was the first time that I followed a farm tractor as the pace vehicle to kick off an organized ride!e2a7bdc4b4e6f50545816b0a8245ac29.jpg878fb59bd2a2f5ee1f83f55a49c87148.jpgcf2870fb34f553ee400026262de67005.jpg69b9e90daa07b426e94cf6da08fe80be.jpg

OMG. So cute! I hope Sarah Bee keeps wearing these on all her rides.

Strava doesn’t lie…and neither does the scale…I actually gained weight on the #farmtoforkfondo ride (which had nothing to do with I scream, you scream, we all scream for whoopie pies;-)c43ca7d9326c8f1c50f270d081c0e81f.jpg

Wow, I don’t think I’ve seen that many turns on a route outside of the 50 States Ride.

It didn’t seem that bad, but I see what you mean. This was by far the best signed ride I have ever been on. Cue sheets were unnecessary.

More pictures:

The banquet the night before, featuring foods from all the farms. We met other riders from all over (NY, Chicago, NJ, DC, …) and some of the farmers.

A cow kissed me and Sarah Bee claims that mustard is better than pickle juice for bike riding nutrition

I’ve had these gloves forever, and they are the only ones I can wear for really long rides and not get some numbing. So I keep them in a special place and bring them out only when I’m riding a metric century or longer. Not sure how many more rides they have in them.

Cows are the BEST! And Sarah Bee is correct. Mustard is WAY better (tasting) than pickle juice for bike riding nutrition. :D

Stopped by New Quarter Park and Freedom Park in Williamsburg on my way home from Norfolk. This vid is from the second park.

Just ’cause, I varied my route today.

In the Nordpark at Bonames

There are nine of these turns on the climb.

Looking back toward the Telekom “Spargel,” the landmark in my neighborhood.

Re-purposed former roundhouse.

This train station is no longer in use, instead there is a set of “modern” platforms about 200 meter down the track.

For some reason, the embedded video doesn’t show up on my computer, but it did show up in Tapatalk. Here’s a link in case anyone else couldn’t see the video: https://vimeo.com/229661087
