ParticipantDid a pre-ride with my wife, Sunyata and Tania and we messed around on some logs at Wakefield. Later on I played some more with another (mostly Bikenetic) crew at Lake Accotink.

So disappointed you did not get a video of Jo and I going up the big log step up! :p
Seriously fun time! Now that I have a front brake that works, I am going to go back and get that first big log over that Tania sailed over like it was nothing!

I crashed on it twice during the women’s ride after Kathy said “watch Tania do it!”.

The pressure of being watched messes me up occasionally too
Hopefully you didn’t get hurt!

Only my ego.
(Me yesterday afternoon packing up for the ride, looking at my shin/knee guards: “Oh, c’mon don’t be baby, you don’t need those at Wakefield!”)
Thanks for riding with us!

If knee and elbow pads give you more courage to try things, I think they’re worth the price of looking goofy to a few people. Please just don’t let them be the big plastic rollerblading ones

ParticipantWhere’d you ride this weekend? How was it?
Saturday: Frederick Watershed. Three friends and I split from the wives’ group, starting from the Hamburg parking lot heading south to Gambrill and back. It was cold, and there were a few puddles from the previous night’s flash storms. Some rocks were slippery. Ferns were out in full force.

Doing the hard ride the previous day, it was all I could do to keep my buddy in sight. He still rips on his 13 year old rigid singlespeed, a format I gave up a few years ago.

ParticipantWe did the 50 mile Transition Tri Loco Ride on Sunday and it was absolutely lovely. Great course, exceptionally well-marked and Feed Zone french toast muffins at each rest stop.
I didn’t work nearly as hard as the two tandem pilots.

ParticipantWhile many were commuting on the congested trails and roads on DC/VA/MD, I was riding on Skyline Drive, where I saw three groups of cyclists going in the other (generally downward) direction.

Tunnel was the coolest place on a hot day, but I did not stay inside because cars.
Cooled off in this waterfall, but it was short-lived since it was about 1 mile into about 8 miles of brutality. I think there was a little descent in there somewhere, but it’s mostly up from 211 to Skyland.
Seems like it should be more. I guess it isn’t.
Storms ahead.Only 50-some miles because thunderstorms cropped up around Big Meadows. Had a car there anyway just in case, but was bummed to not get the mostly downhill to Route 33 and the resulting gran fondo. Still poached the descent back from Dickey’s Ridge to Front Royal.
Now need to get back and ride from Big Meadows to I-64.

ParticipantAnd a bike pic or two just for evidence that a bike was actually involved.

I could show you my Strava link. I don’t think cars can go that slowly.

ParticipantA few of us rode out to Point of Rocks this weekend to intercept Subby on his “nightmare option” ride from Cumberland to Georgetown. He blew by us like we were standing still (and before I could even get out my camera), but twas a fine ride regardless….

Continued from my previous post, I eventually made it to Old Town Alexandria to see El Galeón, a replica of a 16th Century Spanish galleon, in the daylight. The line leading up to the ship to actually board and explore it was probably a few hundred people long, so I made my way around the lines to get pics.
looking from Founders Park

I went out on a dock next to the one the ship was at – (left) view of the sails; (right) sense of scale from people aboard the ship
(left) view from the end of the adjacent dock; (right) a lady saw me about to take a selfie and offered to take this pic, but sadly she didn’t angle it correctly and the top of the shot was cut by the roof of the gazebo-like structure (I appreciated the effort)
The galleon is back in Old Town Alexandria from today, May 25, through Monday, May 29!

ParticipantPhoto from my most recent ride. About 11 pm, nearly a Midnight Saddles ride.
The hill in the background is Denali

Note the bear spray in the water bottle cage. Might have some utility in the WashDC area, particularly with respect to cab drivers.
