ParticipantPicture of my bad ass biker gang from a bike ride from DC to Annapolis and halfway to Baltimore last month. I highly recommend a ride out to Annapolis if you haven’t done it before.

ParticipantMissisquoi Valley Rail Trail (Vermont). Speed limit 35 mph.

Little orange dot in the weeds is the CX bike.

ParticipantBiked around the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge (Vermont). Went out this old railroad trail that was made up mostly of roots and deerflies.

I was greatly concerned the whole trail about getting a flat from the roots because the deerflies did not recognize the effectiveness of Deet. I don’t even normally use Deet so it was a waste. If I had flatted, I would have been forced to sprint out of there with the bike on my shoulder because I wouldn’t have been able to change it in those conditions.

The tailwind coming off Lake Champlain on the road on the way back was so wonderful that even on a slight uphill on the slow CX bike I was able to ride 29 mph.

I’m not sure if deerflies and blackflies are the same thing or not, but your post reminded me of this:

ParticipantThey are different kinds of flies though similar kinds of annoying, but the video has it about right in any case. Blackflies are sort of a swarm of hellishness, whereas deer flies are Kamakaze-style b*stards.

Many years ago, I went mountain biking in the Wisconsin woods during the height of deerfly season. I doused my exposed skin and cotton t-shirt in DEET, but not my lycra shorts because the DEET, or something else in the spray, would kill the lycra tuning the shorts baggy. The deerflies swarmed around every time I had to climb, and covered my @$$ in itchy welts by biting through the shorts, but didn’t touch me anywhere else.

ParticipantI came across a doe and a juvenile deer at the intersection of the Custis and W&OD last night. I have seen a deer nearly every month for the last 12 months during a ride including two near collisions when a deer bolted out of the trees.

ParticipantI took this picture of komorebi with some horses on the Tour de Frederick using a patented “Quickly turn the handlebar left while reaching under the handlebars to hit the button on the GoPro technique.”
Nice expansive views on the ride:

ParticipantJudd forgot to mention the best part of the last photo: the farm in the picture shares a name with one of our most illustrious/infamous Forum members. Steve O, any connection to Offutt Farms?

Dang! I’ve been caught. I’m actually, secretly, an avid alfalfa farmer.

At 30 km I couldn’t decide how much oomph I still had, should I just head back to Frankfurt, or
head towards Großer Feldburg

This sign told me how the legs were feeling, so back to Frankfurt
