ParticipantAfter refueling, I took a road away from the reservoir, two miles with rough cement, then potholed asphalt, then six miles of gravel, rough and frequently potholed large aggregate asphalt, finishing with a mile or so of packed sand.

The reward at the end of that stretch was back on the P-69 highway to the dam and seeing a stork in its nest.

ParticipantI made my second food stop when I got back to the dam. PB&J with Gatorade sure hit the spot at 71 miles.

There was a paved road that went about 2 km along the western shore of the reservoir. That’s where I saw this which I think is the skeleton of a bobsled run.

At mile 101 (edge of Horenka) there was this memorial to the Great Patriotic War.

ParticipantWinter is coming… so things are getting very foggy and even more humid.
Really dislike the concrete roads – these tend to be the sidestreets…April 16, 2016 at 2:08 am #1050947Greenbelt
ParticipantThe high winds brought a few trees down at Fairland Regional. Excellent conditions otherwise, though

ParticipantIf you were Tania, you’d just bunny hop that sucker.

ParticipantTook a few days off the bike and kind of overdid it today. Plus really wet forest roads and trails. This was my second time in these woods, the first was in the winter when there was snow and ice and I was on the studded tires.

Pushcha is at the north limits of Kyiv city, Chernobyl is about 90 miles further north. At the time of the accident 30 years ago, the winds carried the worst of the radiation towards Belarus. I haven’t seen any recent studies of the radiation levels in that forest. It is mostly pine plantation that is being logged, small sections at a time. The area also has peat bogs which can catch fire during really dry spells.

ParticipantBeautiful weather today, sunny and warm. The trails are still a mess of sand, mud, and water hazards and the Pugsley was a good choice.

Once again the online map was wrong. This was supposed to be a trail, but one end was blocked by a wall and a tall fence to the water’s edge

ParticipantAbout 100 meters of real gravel for Cyndi.

This water hazard was about eight inches deep, just enough that I mananged to keep my feet mostly dry.

This is a brand new bridge, I walked the old version just a couple weeks ago. This one is still not really for riding.

ParticipantIs everyone getting tired of Ukraine photos that all seem to look alike? Not to worry, we head to Germany in July. Today we had slightly cooler weather, but still great for a bike ride so I headed out on my gravel bike planning to take some back roads.

About a kilometer after this sign, I had a pair of roe deer (a stag and a doe) try to left hook me. Then they ran parallel with me for another several hundred meters before disappearing into the forest.

ParticipantWhen I plotted out the route I had no idea what I was getting into, I just figured some of the back roads would be rough, wrong!

ParticipantFun in the forest a little north and east of where I was riding the fat bike on Saturday.
