ParticipantFirst day of spring and it was snowing in Kyiv. Gave me another chance to ride the Pugsley off road before changing out the studded tires.

ParticipantWe had a very nice day on Saturday, but I blew off riding (I did take the studded tires off the Pugsley and clean it up a bit). Today was pretty nice too and I decided to get out and explore some river side routes up the Dnipro. North of the Moskovsky Bridge, I cut over and took a promenade along the river that included a bike lane. There were lots of people out and about and was worse than the MVT at Gravelly Point on a nice weekend day.

Then I headed north up the P69 before cutting over on some unpaved village streets to Vyshgorod were I crossed the dam and headed up the east shore reservoir road. I stopped at 25 miles at Lebedivka for a snack and turned down a parallel forest road (paved but mostly rough) for the way back.

ParticipantSaturday, March 26. The first Papillon Cycles shop ride of the season. I suppose it was a shade early, with moderately short notice, Easter weekend, and competing cherry blossoms. So store manager John Harpold and I improvised, and went across the river.

The Tidal Basin was totally jammed, as expected, but Hains Point offered blossoms and unimpeded riding. Afterwards, a trip to the Fish Market @ The Wharf. John picked up oysters, and transported them and 15 lbs of ice in his backpack all the way home, JUST like the bike messenger he was. I will have to disappoint some fans- Yuki did not join us for the ride.
Please add this to your local shop ride database: Papillon Cycles, Arlington, will be doing Saturday morning rides all season, generally alternating between casual coffee rides, and the Arlington Loop, with surprises thrown in along the way. These rides aimed more at the casual rider- NO DROP. Coffee Shop Ride next Saturday. Be there. Aloha.

ParticipantThis past Saturday I decided to revisit the Indian Head Rail Trail in White Plains (MD). It’s a 13 mile paved trail that is quite peaceful and enjoyable to ride on. However, biking to get there and back can be a bit hazardous due to the quality of drivers in that area, but once on the trail you will feel bliss. The route I took to get there from Alexandria is here: https://www.strava.com/activities/527595541
Here is the video of my ride:

ParticipantI finally had motivation and a pretty decent day to get my monthly century ride in. I headed west from Kyiv on the M06 motorway turning off at 31 miles heading into Makariv where I stopped in a park to a PB&J rest stop.

Then on some secondary roads heading towards Zahaltsi. While the road had very few potholes, it was very rough, like gravel spread on warm asphalt and then rolled.

At Volytsya I got on the M06 to head back to Kyiv. I’s only two lane, but had a good shoulder all the way to Bucha. I stopped at a bus shelter for a quick snack. There was also a six mile long shared use trail along this highway from near Kladieivo-Tarasove to Vorzel. Seems pretty new, but it’s not really being maintained and a couple spots were just glorified sidewalk.

I got off the M07 to loop through Irpin and stopped for another PB&J break at a city park. The park has paved paths that are marked half for pedestrians and half for bicycles, but the predominant wheeled vehicles were baby strollers.

ParticipantA ten minute clip from Bogdan Stasiuk who I follow on Strava. Part of his 130 mile ride today.

ParticipantIt’s Sunday and sunny and I decided against the Embassy road group ride so I headed to the unpaved trails instead. This set is heading north along the Desenka River (sort of a channel of the Dnipro?) across from the eastern side of Trukhaniv Island and north of the SkyMall.

ParticipantThe island is basically a big sand bar and the trails are a mix of sand, dirt, grass, and gravel. Some places the sand is very soft, like riding on a beach.
The first two photos are a comparison of the same spot about six weeks apart.

Then there is the mistletoe

Sometimes what appears to be the main track suddenly turns into single track, and no, I did not ride across that bridge, just walked and carried the bike.

ParticipantHere is a shot of a typical soft sand section of the trail.

Then south of the Moskovskyi Bridge there are pine woods.

ParticipantA beautiful day in the neighborhood and a good excuse for a longer than planned bike ride. After climbing up the bluff from the Dnipro I needed to stop for a pause that refreshed (the water bottle was empty at that point).

ParticipantIt was just too nice out today so I rode to lunch on my road bike and then headed out on the highway to enjoy the sunshine and warm temperatures. I got off the M06 motorway just before Lisne.

Took a secondary road the wound along the Bucha River and across a dam at Duchna.

At Bucha I stopped for a snack break before heading across the river to Irpin.

From Irpin I rode the P30 back to Kyiv.

ParticipantMuch nicer weather in Kyiv today than in Arlington plus my wife was spending the day writting EERS so I went out to play.
First up signs of spring (finally) south of Vyshgorod

From there I crossed the dam and headed up the east shore of the reservoir. Mostly nice road, but very sandy on the sides. I stopped for lunch and had to walk the bike to the shore because the sand was too soft for even my 700×35 tires.
