My brother, Mike Offutt, a firefighter in Colorado Springs, knows about our little FS game and posted a pic on Instagram with #freezingsaddles a few days ago
    It snows there, too.

    Do attempted ride pictures count?

First challenge was digging a path to the shed, so I could get my bike out:

The street by my house was totally unplowed:

But I’d had perfect attendance the past two Freezing Saddles, so I was determined. I figured I’d carry my bike to the nearest plowed road, as shown on Montgomery County’s Storm Operations page. Bad news is that the bike was heavy, and hard to carry in all that snow. Good news was, when I needed to rest, it would stand up without a kickstand:

Unfortunately, when I got there, the street looked like this:

I’m sure it had been plowed at some point in the afternoon. But it wasn’t exactly rideable by the time I got there!

Oh no, Carol! Gosh I hope you didn’t drag that bike through a foot and a half of snow for a mile! I think it should count if you did! Did I count the three miles I walked my bike after the free hub broke last winter? Hell yeah!

No, I gave up after a block, when I realized I wouldn’t even be able to walk the bike. I figured that I was likely to cause major injuries at my age if I attempted to carry a 64-lb. bike for a mile.

Light snow was falling on my way to lunch (about a half inch of fresh accumulation) and then started coming down a little heavier (three inches by the time I got back on the bike). There were a couple of tense moments as I could hear a car behind me start to slide while braking.

This duck is sitting on several eggs, nesting under a box in a curbside planter on H St.

Powerpuff Pete and I snuck into HP yesterday afternoon and got slapped around by the wind trying to do a loop on our commute home. The road is clear, fyi, but the wind very, very strong.

The right bike with the right tires for the conditions (mostly ice and crusty snow) in the Pushcha-Voditsa forest just on the north side of Kyiv. My riding companion did not have studs and did more walking. I still fell three times because of my poor off road handling skills in the rutted ice.

Forest roads. There were actually some hills, but I didn’t stop to take pictures. Also with the temperature just above freezing, we were breaking through a lot of thin ice on the puddles in the dips.

Now I need to get a Garmin that has a map, we would have been lost on this ride without my companion’s 810.

Nice fatbikes. And Land Cruiser for the win.

What a joy to be reunited with my road bike for the first time since Snowmaggedon. I went and did loops tonight around the Navy Federal Credit Union in Vienna (4.8 mile circuit). b1e908d58a0481205cbb16262ec03a01.jpg
