Yet another reason to go to coffee club: if I hadn’t detoured to go to HDCC this morning, I would’ve missed this sight at the intersection of the MVT and 4MRT.

Quite a wide range of road and trail conditions. Main streets in Kyiv are clear, but people are parking their cars wherever they dang well please effectively eliminating one to two travel lanes on many streets. The sidepaths along the Dnipro River and on the bridges over it were a mix of packed snow and very rough ice with a very few clear patches. The sidepaths with cycle lanes along Heneral Vatutina Ave and Onore de Bal’zaka St had been mostly cleared, the only bad sections were where cars had driven on them and packed them down. I did not stop to take photos until I got to the off road tracks of Trukhaniv Island. I had seen two other riders out on bikes, one asked if he could exchange bikes with me (I think).

Something appropriate for today’s holiday – the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum. It’s a bit out of the way and the ride goes through some poorer areas of Anacostia and Fort Stanton, but it’s manageable during the day. (I probably wouldn’t ride through there at night though.)

I’ve read about the museum but I had never visited before. I didn’t have enough time to go inside. Next time. It would have been nice to get out of the 5F wind chill.

There are bike racks just off to the right, plus a few more at the back end of the building.

The view of central DC from one of the hills of Anacostia. It’s a modestly challenging climb to get to the Museum. It will probably deter most casual cyclists. It’s not the toughest hill ever, but it involves some work.

That’s Morris Road SE for that climb. I hate climbs but I can do this one, albeit grumbling all the way, and the view at the top is definitely worth it. This pic was taken as I crested the hill last winter.

I’ve stopped at the museum to take a quick breather (and because it has nice bathrooms!) but haven’t taken the time to tour the exhibits. That is on my to-do list.

2.2 miles in the blizzard of 2016 by Jon, on Flickr

That was a ton of fun. Lots of chatty people who thought I was crazy. One woman told me I needed a fat bike. I told her this is the fattest one I have.

Crazy fun little ride in front of my house after I shoveled myself out of the house.441805accf36a591df793118c128c70a.jpgc8a85fdd68bf8b64171d6a39b18eadc2.jpg

The Pugsley was quite popular on my short ride this morning. Braddock Road; Mt. Vernon Avenue; Corner of Mt. Vernon and Braddock.

I decided to venture out into the snowstorm myself. I found myself pushing more than riding as I never saw a speck of asphalt on the 2.6 mile ride/push around Holmes Run in Alexandria. On the streets, I found that the sidewalks that were shoveled earlier in the day were much more rideable (thank you, people that shoveled their sidewalks!). Even if the ride was only a few miles long, I got a full body workout from pushing through the snow.

There is another bike in this photo. Did you flyby someone?

Also, I cropped out the 1/2+ mile that I portaged my bike today. Should I have counted it?

I portaged down my driveway and counted it. I also counted pushing my bike up the last hill. It was a small percentage of my ride, and it seemed an awful lot like CX to me; after all, it’s not like the pushing and carrying don’t count in CX racing.

I have no idea whose bike was locked up there as I saw no one else in a block radius of it at the time. Hopefully the owner came back for it.

In regards to counting bike portaging in Freezing Saddles, I think that it counts because if you don’t have the bike there it’d be just a walk.

I shoveled and threw snow for the better part of the day with lots of help from my neighbors and @SarahBee so that I could do a sleaze ride just before the second dump of #blizzard2016
