KayakCyndi and I saw the “dog sled” man training his team on the WOD gravel trail in Vienna on our way to the Green Lizard for a real coffee. Very cool way to start the day

Baby squirrel running around near the Washington Monument. Unfortunately, I think it might be an orphan. He/she wasn’t afraid of people, which might be a problem. A couple kids were chasing it and trying to pet it and pick it up. The squirrel wouldn’t run off although he jumped up at one point. I tried to tell the kids that they could injure the squirrel. (One girl jumped up and almost landed on it. :( )

The squirrel later ran onto 15th St SW. Lucky that it made it across the street without getting run over. A bus was headed up that way but the squirrel was on the other side of the road by then.

Today was my September century ride. Three other people had made noises of joining me for about a third of the ride, but I ended up solo the whole way. I headed north from Kyiv on the way to Dymer where there is supposed to be a good road for cycling that follows the west bank of the Dnipro River. Sure enough a delightfully smooth two lane road for 32 kilometers with very little motor vehicle traffic on Saturday morning. It was a little funny how the pavement conditions deteriorated just past the gates of a large estate (last phto, I don’t know if comes out). Hmmm

Cyndi wants me to find her some gravel. I’ve not found much of that. most non-paved roads in this area ar packed sandy soil. Also very still water on the river.

When I got back to Kyiv I stopped at an LBS for a replacement tube since I used my spare when I flatted at mile 71 of the ride.

Today’s ride (out and back) was practically due west on the M06/E40 highway. Once I was getting close to home the road was closed to do accident cleanup. Lots of car parts scattered over all three eastbound lanes.

All the new paint on Westmoreland was washing away in the rain today, forming lots of white puddles….Good job Fairfax!

I knew it was only a matter of time – sidewall bulge in the rear tire on the Xtracycle and, despite the huge increase in popularity lately, no shop in the city seems to stock the 20X2.15 rear tires for them. Coming off the MBT the tire went flat. Luckily, there’s a Zipcar minivan nearby (no chance this bike fits in our car). My wife came to meet me, I took the bike home, returned the Zipcar, and took the kids on the bus back home.

Took a spin through Holmes Run feeling out my new tires yesterday. My first time going from Eisenhower all the way to Columbia Pike. I didn’t realize there were so many water crossings. The last one was a doozy – at least a foot deep. I think next time I’ll walk that one or attempt to ride over the stepping stones and fall in anyway.

Inspiration works in mysterious ways. I did this ride back in February while visiting my sister in Clearwater, FL, but lost interest in creating a video for it months ago. Recently, I felt compelled to go back and create the video, so I did.

To set the stage: while the DC area was a frozen hellscape with Frozen Saddles in full swing, the Tampa Bay area was covered in a dense fog so thick that a cruise ship was stranded at sea for a few days (all over the local news, BTW).

    Here’s the video:

Hopefully next year I’ll actually be able to cross Tampa Bay on the Courtney Campbell Causeway Trail and be able to see across the water, too!

Just a couple of shots around Kyiv from today’s ride. I was riding a counterclockwise loop including Trukhaniv Island, so I rode down to the Dnipro pedestrian bridge for a change. Kind of like the “S” Curve of Death.

In honor of the Libby Hill climb in RVA. This is the Podil’s’kyi Descent near Babyn Yar. The paving on the downhill is worse than on the climb.

Finally, in the far north of Kyiv is the Pushcha-Vodytsia district. I’ve been by this old dacha a couple of times, but this was the first time I had my camera. Makes me think of “Doctor Zhivago.”

The Tampa side of the Courtney Campbell used to be awful for cycling, but with the airport interchange project a few years ago they built a trail that connects down to Cypress St and from there into South Tampa and downtown. Should be a fun ride.
