Normally I don’t like to stop and take pictures, but I had to dismount here because the side-path ahead was full of loose sand and i was walking.

I like your helmet mirror! What brand and do you really like it?

Interesting commute. I planned to ride through the pedestrian plaza on Pennsylvania Ave., in front of the White House. No cars and there’s often something interesting going on. I was expecting to see tourists from around the world, possibly a protester or a religious advocate (including the guy who rides his bike and uses two bullhorns for his stream-of-consciousness speeches).

But I wasn’t expecting to see a group of couples salsa dancing.

I’ve seen ballroom dancing on Freedom Plaza in the evening before, but not salsa dancing on the pedestrian plaza. It’s kind of neat, actually.

So I thought, OK, that was cool to see on my commute. I figured the rest of the commute would be the usual mix of cars, pedestrians walking to the monuments, food trucks and the monuments themselves. That’s always relaxing.

But I hear music playing as I ride by the Washington Monument. I knew there was an outdoor concert at the Sylvan Theater a couple weeks ago. Maybe this was something similar. I heard a woman singing Cyndi Lauper’s hit “Time After Time.” She was pretty good too, so I decided to take a look.

It was another concert in the Music at the Monument series. The singer was Sylver Logan Sharp, a DC local. She mentioned that she had been the lead singer for the band Chic for 20 years, starting in 1990. (That group had some big hits during the disco era, such as “Le Freak” (Freak Out), “I Want Your Love” “Everybody Dance” (Clap Your Hands) and “Good Times“. She joined the group later on.) She put on a great show with a lot of energy. I saw on the Periscope (Twitter) video feed that she also covered Christopher Cross’s “Sailing“. She sang some of the Chic hits and a couple of her own singles. She encouraged people to dance. One of the stage crew (or entourage) brought out an elderly woman to dance. I think she was from Sylver’s church. Other people started dancing, including one guy who kinda looked like Eminem. He had some good breakdancing moves.

They brought out a large birthday cake for people who had birthdays that day or weekend. This included the elderly woman, who is 90 years old. And she was dancing and grooving to the music. Everyone was invited to have a piece of the cake.

The organizer reminded everyone that there are concerts at the Sylvan Theater stage on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of every month, from May through October. They are all free and open to the public. I enjoyed the performance. Pretty awesome to be riding along on a bike commute, then stopping to see a cool concert.

After hitting my favorite farmers market for 50 fresh clams and couple dozen oyster ( mind you, $4/doz) on my faithful Schwinn Topedo, my little bunny and I gobbled up some warm sticky buns and cinnamon dounuts by the dock.

Saturday morning haul from the Falls Church farmers market. The trunk bag is perfect for commuting, not quite adequate for all the goodies I wanted to take home. In there is a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread, over half dozen peaches, some ripe tomatoes, and a fresh mozzarella concoction called Burrata. Oh yeah.

And just when Vaya was starting to feel full of herself, someone parked a Bambike next to her. I sad hello to the guy, who confirmed it’s as nice to ride as to look at.

Made it home with nothing lost or bruised, and no unintended wheelies. Next time, bring a bigger bag!

While many of you were riding the Reston Century today, I decided I would ride a century in the area northeast of Kyiv. I mapped out a route that went up the south side of the Desna River and came back the north side, although not really within view other than when I actually crossed it.

At the crossroads where I was to head back south there were a couple of WWII memorials

I will be riding the VR-120 next Sunday so I was trying to not really stop until I had reached 120 km. clearly didn’t quite do that since I took the pictures above. Still, I finally did stop at a shop to replenish water (made a mistake and got the fizzy king). Like many of the village shops I had been riding by all morning this one had a bike rack out front. I was a little surprised how many bikes I saw in the country being used for transportation.

After stopping at the shop, I rode another four miles and then pulled off to eat my lunch.

You see very few stop signs, but this yield sign was used for target practice at my lunch site.

When I got back to the Dnipro River, I crossed over the dam north of Kyiv (last crossing for a good long way). On the right bank there was a park and I stopped for ice cream and to psych myself up for the climb to come (about 300 feet over a mile and a half.

    Hi guys

I made a short film in the Swiss Alps. Maybe you like it :) I filmed it with a go pro + LCD.

Ukraine Independence Day. I headed out one of the three most popular training routes in Kyiv – yes, it is a limited access highway (M-06/E40).

The only problem with that was the cobblestone bus stops in Kyiv.

Off on another smaller through route, the countryside petrol station had a bike rack.

And this was marked as a rail crossing by the Garmin route mapping.

Brought the old tank to Myrtle Beach. It’s been great fun cruising the beach in the early morning.
