Heading into the abyss early last evening

I’ll preface these pics with this: the BEST way to get to the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms and/or fireworks is by bike. Easy to get in, and easy to get out.

I headed to East Potomac Park/Hains Point and got a spot directly across the water from the Titanic Memorial which is where the fireworks barge would be. As I found out, you are REALLY CLOSE to the fireworks if you grab a spot there, as I almost had to lay on my back to see the full fireworks! That said, it was pretty awesome, and I will be in that spot next year since I enjoyed it so much.

Worth repeating again and again. Especially this coming week, when the blossoms will peak.

Highly recommended: bike around the tidal basin in the morning before the tourists wake up.

And skip the section along East Basin Drive in front of the Jefferson. It is nearly faster to just go all the way down Hains point and back up

Where is it?

Santa Clarita valley, just north of LA. I rented a bike and rode up to a radio tower where you could (sort of) see Los Angeles way off in the smog.

The blossoms have started to open along the Tidal Basin. NPS has predicted peak bloom to occur April 11-14.
