You’d think with three kids on the bike, at least one would be willing to pedal on the hills.October 5, 2014 at 3:01 am #1011460TwoWheelsDC
ParticipantA few from the Tour of Richmond. The new course was pretty nice, although a bit flatter than the last two years. I got in with a couple good pacelines early on and did the first 65 miles at about 20mph, but then a really bad accident broke things up. I arrived about two minutes after a couple of riders bumped and went down while a truck was passing them (it looked like the truck was passing legally and didn’t contribute to the accident) and then got partially run over by the truck. Bad scene all around, but there were so many people on sight by the time I arrived that my presence there was just occupying space (I didn’t actually witness the accident, so no help there either), so I kept moving. That was also about the same time the course turned straight into a stiff headwind, and I ended up riding alone into that for the last 35 miles, which was not so fun. Ended up with a 5:37 elapsed time though, which I feel good about since I rode fixed.

ParticipantThe rider who got run over is a friend of a friend. Six broken ribs, stitches in head, lost some teeth, awaiting evaluation of fractured vertebrae last I heard.

Shame on me for riding past and not snapping a picture while Dino had a Nats cap on his head and Giants jersey in his claw.

This guy road Cat 5!
A very crowded field. I think it was 112+ and a narrow start. Nice melee in one of the first turns as someone went down.

ParticipantI had to take my daughter to NE DC on Saturday and had a few hours to kill, so why not bike to some new places? Went to UMD to watch my nephew play Ultimate. Passed a Boundary stone on the way:
Then went to Proteus. Never been, since it’s way far out of my ‘hood. Evidently Laurie is in Utah, but I got a pic with John.
Also, the obligatory photo of two killer, invisible bollards on the Northwest Branch trail. At this time of day, the transition from sunlight to shade and the fact the bollard is brown makes it extraordinarily dangerous. Way too many on this trail serving no purpose except to maim.

Oh man, that’s rough. Hope he makes a full recovery. I found the paceline behavior to be pretty hit-or-miss, and there were some big groups formed up, so unfortunately I’m not surprised something like this happened.

Dude is a VERY experienced pace line rider from what I’m told. The guy he touched wheels with maybe not so. This is a dangerous sport. Especially when done in close proximity to motor vehicles.

ParticipantHere are some pics from the 200K I did this past weekend out in western VA/West Virginia.
http://www.strava.com/activities/203352600Temperature wise it was a beautiful fall day, but the wind was brutal at times. It sucks when you’re climbing a mile-long “roller” and 100 yards from the top have to deal with a stiff headwind making things so much harder. I think this should conclude the big climb rides I do this year.

I had the opportunity to take a shot of the Cedar Creek civil war battlefield bathed in yellow sunlight from the setting sun, but my phone died as soon as I snapped the last shot. Oh well.
