I hope you didn’t just leave that there. Looks like plenty of good meat left in that baby.

ParticipantPlenty of bike parking available at the Tysons metro stop! (This was last Tuesday, not a bike in sight.)

Trailer vs longtail is my only experience. The trailer is way more stable – at a stop, you don’t have any extra lateral weight. And if you fall, it’s just you, not the kids.

So what?
The authorities don’t tend to look kindly on dropping kids on their heads. No matter how much they annoy you.

ParticipantHere are some pictures from the 200K I did last weekend. Starting on the north side of Frederick I went north to Gettysburg, then west toward Chambersburg before winding SW and around to Waynesboro. From there I climbed over the mountain again and had a fun descent to Thurmont, and rode south again to the starting point.

Gettysburg, with the Pennsylvania memorial. The stratocumulus clouds provide a weird sort of geometry to the scene.
Approaching the Eternal Light Peace Memorial. I had not seen this before.
A tunnel of corn in PA. Does this look like Orson, IN off of “The Middle”?
From this inconspicuous little hill you can see a mile or road maybe? This view was unexpected.August 12, 2014 at 3:05 am #1007917bobco85
ParticipantOn Saturday I did the longest Bike ‘n’ Hike I’ve ever attempted (15.5 miles hiked, 16 miles biked). To explain, a bike ‘n’ hike is where you bike to an area, park your bike, go hiking, and eventually bike back home. It’s basically one of my favorite things to do as it bypasses the requirement of having a car or Metro access while allowing me to get out of the city and enjoy nature for a bit.
For this bike ‘n’ hike, I biked to Chain Bridge along the Custis Trail and C&O Canal Towpath, parked my bike, and hiked along the Potomac Heritage Trail all the way to the American Legion Bridge and back while including the Turkey Run Loop, then returning home along the C&O Canal Towpath and Custis Trail. Since the Potomac Heritage Trail is closed to bicycles, the only way is to hike on it, but you can at least access it using a bike. Turkey Run Park is also inaccessible to bicycles because it is off the GW Parkway, but you can bike ‘n’ hike to get to it if you don’t have a car.
Although the photos don’t really show it, I was wearing my Bike Arlington hat that I had gotten from BTWD the whole time (it’s my new favorite hat to wear when going on long walks/hikes)!

ParticipantHey nice. Pics. If you take a lot of nature photos, like of specific plants and animals – if you’re into it, this website may be interesting to you.
You can post sightings of specific animals or plants and generally add to the record of where they live. It’s kind of a crowd sourcing biologist site. If you post a picture of an organism that you have no idea what it is, you can click a box that says “ID please” and other people who know what they’re doing will help out with an ID. I’ve done that for pictures of spiders and such that I’m not sure whether they’re dangerous or not. I have an accout on there. Chris5, I think is my username.

Thanks for the link! I took a quick look at it, and I’m going to sign up later tonight. It looks like I’ll be spending a lot of time on that site, though

Participant50 Miles up the GAP trails

The Kid! Not me. No no, I did 20 on the C&O.

Hey, but that’s a 70 mile day! The Kid got two flats and learned how to boot his tire with a $.

ParticipantYou must be proud. And I am sure you could have done the 50 on the gap.

ParticipantThe Northwest Branch trail is quite stunning, although it doesn’t really connect to any major attractions. All these photos are from the portion of the trail north of University Blvd.

The trail info page says that bikes are only permitted on 2.7 miles of the trail. Are these pictures from that, or is the page out of date? (Last updated 2008.)
