Are there any advantages of a trailer over a box bike, aside from price and storage/lifting? I get that those are decisive for many, but as far as plain ol’ use, box bikes are just awesome.

Steering and climbing? I don’t know though, I haven’t ridden a box bike much.

The steering takes some getting used to (more so on a Bullitt than a bakfiets), but I found that riding with a trailer did, too. Once you know what you’re doing, steering is as easy if not easier, and climbing on a lighter one (like a Bullitt) is just as easy, I find.
Trailer vs longtail is my only experience. The trailer is way more stable – at a stop, you don’t have any extra lateral weight. And if you fall, it’s just you, not the kids.

Yeah, I assume a lot of it is just getting used to it. I read the full version of this first article (in print) which sort of led me to believe a box bike wouldn’t be the best choice for the hilly terrain I’m in: http://bicycletimesmag.com/bicycle-times-issue-24-way/
Indeed. Not that I have time, money, or need for n+1, but despite having a Burley trailer, I now find myself lusting after longtails. I used to think that if I got a second bike it would be some old Peugeot frame rescue SS conversion. Now I think I’d go for an Xtracycle.

Next year, 100-mile ride. Next year, 100-mile ride. NEXT year, 100-mile ride. The more I say it, the more I will prepare for it (including flexibility so I don’t pull a muscle a month before the ride)!
