I’ll have some more pictures from this weekend’s ride near Wintergreen, but here is a start from Saturday’s ride up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here is that day’s route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5052829.

Oh man, we must have just missed each other. I came up the opposite way from Vesuvius on Saturday (and came up from the Wintergreen side on Sunday.) Small world!

The husband of the couple that ran our inn rode across the US in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial ride. He said that the climb up from Vesuvius was one of the hardest. I still wanted to go there to try the BBQ at Gertie’s.
My wife, son, and I recently spent about 10 days in Florence and Siena, Italy. Lots of bikes, but mostly practical clunkers. In Florence there are a few bike lanes, but for the most part pedestrians, bikes, scooters and cars all compete on narrow streets.

This sign, near a busy highway, caught my eye. It says “Here there was a fatal accident. The life is yours, don’t lose it on the street!”

A highlight of the trip was a bike tour through the Tuscan countryside. We didn’t go very far or very fast. This was a fun ride for tourists, not a training ride for serious cyclists.

The sign here says “Welcome to the road to Chianti Classico”. Chianti is one of the historic wine regions of Italy, and Chianti Classico is the heart of it, the original region.

Siena has some very steep streets. This one is a steady 16% grade. The fellows coming up it were part of a supported tour.

My favorite sign from the trip. “Those who pedal change the world sweetly.” No idea who placed it, or why.
