The essence of cool is to look like a middle-aged government bureaucrat: khakis!
I was cruising down the MVT this evening at 18-21 mph on my new whiz-bang road bike when a gent riding a flat bar hybrid, toe cages and wearing khakis passed me with no evidence of difficulty. That sir, is the essence of cool!

My friend Evan does that a lot. He has a distinctive riding style. He rides with elbows bent and leaning forward… getting quite aerodynamic for a dude on a hybrid. He motors past a lot of folks on road bikes. He’s an inspiration.
Yeah it’s amazing how little difference there can be between bikes, especially for MUPs/commuting/etc. I rode my hybrid as a SS for a couple months and never really felt slower than my road bike. Leaning forward/down and putting your hands in a narrow grip can make flat bars somewhat aero-ish.
I have to walk past quite a lot of cubeville to get to my desk and before I change so yeah, I often wear MTB shorts, etc over the top.
Maybe you could take your son on a long ride on a hard saddle in jeans and then offer the spandex option half way through. Or yeah, liners. And some MTB shorts have liners that are padded like full road shorts/bibs.
This is from my ride from Sunday afternoon. A nice 42.3 mile ride after having slept in (Sunday is my designated lazy day of the week), I finally got to experience the multi-colored wonder that is the Anacostia Tributary Trail System! Shown are the Custis, C&O Canal, Capital Crescent, Georgetown Branch, Sligo Creek, NW Branch, Anacostia River, Metropolitan Branch, and Mount Vernon trails with a few bike lanes/sharrows and government buildings as well. I’ll definitely be heading that way more often on future trips, especially since there are more trails to ride!
