ParticipantTuesday, going North on Difficult Run/CCT, trying to get to Lake Fairfax.
The trail was as dry as I hoped, with muddy/puddly sections where the muddly/puddly sections always live (at least as far as I’ve seen).
And then this:
I’m also miffed that despite owning a Troll and going under multiple bridges, it occurred to me way too late that I’ve never taken a Troll-under-bridge photo.

From Wednesday evening, when I saw a preview screening of a new documentary “Fed Up” about the food industry and the excess sugar in the American diet, especially in schools. Katie Couric is the executive producer although she didn’t attend the Q&A session. Sen. Cory Booker, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a producer and the director were there. (I thought DeLauro was some cyberpunk or bohemian artist from Greenwich Village or Paris, but she’s actually a 71-yr-old Congresswoman. With dyed red and brown hair!) The movie is interesting, though not without some flaws. I don’t watch many political documentaries, so maybe I wasn’t prepared for the propagandistic approach.
However, the main point that refined sugar is a nutritional disaster is true. The parts about getting fast-food companies and soda machines out of schools, well, that’s a more complicated part of the issue. They did make a good point that people used to think that smoking was normal, but it has since been demonized and banned from many areas. This would have been unthinkable 40 years ago, when more than 40 percent of adults smoked.
They pointed out that there were 0 cases of childhood Type II diabetes in the U.S. in 1980. It was known as adult-onset diabetes at the time. But now there are more than 57,000 cases of children with Type II diabetes. Astounding and sad. The total number of cases of diabetes among all Americans tripled between 1990 and 2010, according to the CDC. Also very sad, but not surprising. I think most people are vaguely familiar with these stats already, but it is eye-opening to hear exact numbers.
Anyway, I rode a CaBi bike over there, so that’s why I’m posting this. It was also the first time that I’ve seen the zebras in the Pennsylvania Ave. bike lanes. I don’t ride on that road too often.

I saw yas! That was me in the 50+ jersey going the other way. Beautiful ride. Not too hot, not too windy, no rain.
I got a new PR for a 100 mile ride @ 5 hrs, 20 minutes. (Like a ton of other people I had to ride on down the road a)nd back to make it come out to 100 instead of 98.3 or whatever.) About half of the ride was in a large group of faster riders, so that takes the glow off it it a little bit, but the way back was ALL me
p.s. traffic on the way back home SUUUUUUUUCKED!

Dang, that is quick. I think our elapsed time was 6:30 or something, but I’m still at my in-laws in Richmond so I haven’t had a chance to upload the ride. I felt like I had plenty of energy left at the end, but fixed gear+flat ride = sore ass. I was actually very grateful for the stop lights over the last few miles!

ParticipantNot much more to say on the Five Boro Bike Tour, but I do think that in general it was fun. I finally finished my video of the ride, so enjoy:
