Bill Nye the Science Guy was one of the featured guests at this weekend’s USA Science & Engineering Festival at the convention center.

Mike Rowe of “Dirty Jobs” was there too. Here he is interviewing a robot. Or attempting to. The robot wasn’t always cooperative.

One of Bill Nye’s old clips, from The Science Guy show, appropriately bike-themed:

According to his bio, Bill is a bike enthusiast:
“Bill discovered that he had a talent for tutoring in high school, and while growing up in Washington, DC. He spent afternoons and summers de-mystifying math for his fellow students. When he wasn’t hitting the books, Bill was hitting the road on his bicycle. He spent hours taking it apart to “see how it worked.” Bill rode in the unusual Cannonball 300 a few times. It’s 300 miles in one day, from Seattle to Spokane, Washington. One year, he finished first unsupported. Now, he commutes by bike in the Los Angeles area. He’s down to just five bicycles.”

That’s some serious riding, 300 miles in one day! But it’s kind of unfortunate that he only has five bicycles nowadays.

ParticipantSaturday single track on the Cabin John Trail. Was fun but a bit more technical in parts than I was led to believe. Of course, I don’t have much off road experience and my CX bike let me down on some steep climbs (traction) and descents (brakes). After this ride, I was convinced enough that the canti’s are hopeless and I ordered some mini-v brakes.

And then Sunday was family #bike4icecream.

That looks fun! Do you have a route/map (or is this just a standard/official park trail)? I am always looking for places to ride the cx bike.

Here’s the trail map:

http://www.montgomeryparks.org/PPSD/ParkTrails/trails_MAPS/cabin_john_svu.shtmThe top is only a few miles from me and it runs 9 miles to the river. I got a bit lost a few times and didn’t ride the very last section but overall it was awesome.

ParticipantOn Saturday I checked out the Indian Head Rail Trail in Charles County, MD. At 13 miles long and almost completely flat (um, rail trail, duh), it was a pleasant trail to take on my ride that day.

ParticipantPolo and Wilson left last November with dynamo lights, a solar chargers, and camping gear, headed for Pittsburgh first, and then I thought they were going to turn south and ride the Underground Railroad routes.
But it looks like they went to the Pacific coast instead.

I love it when 60 year old bowling shirts become new cycling clothes. -
