KeymasterBikeArlington and Food Rescue DC are again partnering on a pointless prize to encourage Freezing Saddlers to get some miles while doing some good. Food Rescue is a nonprofit coordinates volunteers who pick-up excess healthy food from local food donors and deliver it directly to local social service agencies that feed the food insecure. (Thanks to our partnership last year, they have indeed added the category “bikeable” food rescues).
To participate, riders will have to sign up on the Food Rescue DC website to get access to the dashboard, which has the delivery details. Do the delivery and mark your ride in Stava with the #Foodrescue hashtag.
To simplify things this year, we’ll let you count the miles going to the rescue as part of the trip, but ask that you log your food rescue trip once the food is delivered. The miles you accrue to get to the rescue will count toward this prize, but we want to avoid shenanigans like doing a doing a 1-mile rescue in the middle of a century ride. Mention Freezing Saddle in your comments on the Food Rescue site when you close your rescues, as a means of verification.
If there are no Food Rescue opportunities in your neck of the woods and would like to work with another food-based NPO, just tag your rides #foodrescue hashtag and name the NPO. I’ll check them out and if legitimate, I’ll allow it for the BAFS Pointless Prize.
This is also an opportunity for you to leave any comments to help inform Food Rescue’s bike program long-term. Many rescues are labeled as “bikeable routes” as well as “challenge” routes for people with cargo bikes or trailers to take bulkier loads. Riders are welcome to peruse the app, of course, and ask them about the viability of any route that catches their eye. We suspect their are many rescues that COULD be bikeable, but aren’t labeled as such.
Eva Reynolds of Food Rescue DC will be lurking in this thread to comment and answer any questions.
We will award pointless prizes for:
1. the most food rescues trips completed by bike;
2. the most bike miles completed for food rescue;Prizes will again be custom tote bags made from old Bike to Work Day banners.

ParticipantHello! I’m the lurker, and you can sign up here to register as a food rescuer. Use the search filters to set your vehicle as “Bicycle” or, if you’re feeling bold and have a trailer or otherwise-enhanced carrying capacity, “Compact Car.”
To Henry’s point about collaborating with other organizations: if you know a local group that is looking for food donations, e.g. a faith-based organization, feel free to connect us so I can invite them into our program. Our service is completely free! My email is eva@foodrescue.us, and I’m the Site Coordinator for Food Rescue US – DC.

ParticipantHi all! Flagging a new, very bike-friendly rescue for tomorrow (Friday 2/7) morning: Nino’s Bakery at 1310 L Street NW. They don’t donate regularly, just when they don’t sell out, so you’ll see them pop up in the nightly emails from time to time. Tomorrow’s donation is 26 cookies/pastries, so should easily fit on a bike.
Check the Food Rescue US app for details and to claim this food rescue, thank you!
